I went on the hunt for some Monitor 10s for myself.
I ran across some M7s and bought those. Excellent sound, but not as much bass as the M10s. A few months later I found a pair of M10s for a good price. The guy even threw in an extra pair of peerless tweets! Ran across a second pair of M10s with the Silver Coils for $50.00. I could'nt pass them up. Got a pair of M5s at a garage sale (along with a Polk sub..M100?) even cheaper than the last 10s. The 5s also had the Silver Coils. I use the M10s (with the Silver Coils) in my H/T with one of the M5s as a center speaker. The M10s sound great with the Polk sub. I found another pair of M10s with the peerless for $50.00, and had to get them. I was in Monitor overload...(or heaven). Lastly, I picked up a pair of M4s that I use for the surrounds in my H/T. One of the tweeters was bad, so I ordered a pair from an auction site, and now they're up and running.
That's about all my Monitor gear. Now, the SDAs I got..... -
I have a set of original Monitor 10s with the Peerless tweets. They are a very good sounding speaker especially considering the $75 I spent for them. I can't imagine finding another pair of speakers that would sound better for the money. I would really like to try a set of Monitor 7s considering what Matthew Polk said about them.

They are a wonderful speaker. Not too too big. And small enough to put out some big sound for sure..

I'm in San Antone. I was mainly using this site for reviews, as I ran across speakers for sale locally. It's been a great source of information. I joined the site so I could take advantage of the discount when making purchases. I planned on upgrading the Silver Coil tweets on some of my speakers, but to be honest, I like the way they sound in my tv room. Mucho carpets and curtains. Besides, I have a two pair of M10s with the peerless, so I'm good. Where are you located?

When it comes to BIG SOUND. Monitor 10As can rock your room with no problem. They "punch" harder than the 7s or 5s.
But for more "refined" instrumental music my 5As, on that seemingly unimpressive looking JVC R-S33 receiver, never cease to impress. Peerless tweeters are winners! Love that sound.

Havent really decided what yet. Ive been enjoying the vintage gear way too much. Which is my favorite at this moment. I see some nice set ups on CP bit i have way to many other hobbies that take up alot of my spare money. Especially with 3 children,1 still at home

I have a pair of M10s in my bedroom. I'm powering them with a Sansui 8080db. Those M10s have the peerless. They sound real good with that receiver.
In my den is my H/T setup. Those M10s have the Silver Coils (M5 center and M4 surrounds). A Yamaha 5440 h/t receiver is powering those. It's a smaller (low power) receiver, but it sounds really good with the Polk sub running with them. I like listening to music in there with the receiver in 2 channel mode. Those old Chicago cds sound really good!
I currently don't have any of my other Polk speakers in use. I have a pair of Cerwin Vega d9 speakers in the living room. I'm powering them with an Onkyo M504. The living room system tends to get changed out quite a bit, though.dave

Nice Sansui for sure. i just picked up a Sansui g2000 and i have that hooked to 5jr's and it is amazing match up. My 10's are hooked to Marantz 2252b and it does very well with the SL1000 tweets. Id love to upgrade the tweets later on down the road. Cheap price for upgrades too. And from what ive read here. It will be well worth it..

Oh...I've always want one of their G- series receivers. The 8080db is the series just before the G. I also have a Sansui 9900z. That's a pretty sweet sounding receiver too. I've used it to power the 2bs. They complimented each other well.
How much did you pay for the G2000, if you don't mind me asking?
I like that old Marantz, too. I have a 2230 that is loaned out. Also, a 2270 that is down for repairs. Wish I had the 2270 back in action.dave

If you're up for the drive, feel free to come up and meet some of the other Texas polkies on the 20th. The more the merrier.

Have you got a link for more info on the 20th? I work on Saturdays, but if it isn't too far a drive I might be able to swing it.dave

I sit here and listen to my Monitors and am just blown away as they have always done since i started listening to them. It seems once you match them up with receiver & get them in the sweet spot they dont let you down..

A & B Monitor 7 vs 10's today. Ive never done this A & B (usually i just switch them out. Big difference
So i did it on a Marantz 2252b. I was quite surprised at the 7's. they did a fine job for being a smaller speaker with only 1 driver vs the 2 on the 10's....the 10's sounded slightly boomy so i adjusted it to the best i could with my ears & what is available on the Marantz. Not bad----but. The 7's held their own. More clean bass & overall to me a much better sound coming from the Marantz--so the 7's will stay paired with it....the 10's will find a new home hooked to a Yamaha cr 1040 with a tad bit more juice. Hopefully it will match up nicely with it.. -

This is very similar to what most people say about this comparison. Personally, I haven't had the opportunity to make the comparison so the 10As have never sounded boomy to me. The 7s have always been seen as the cleanest and best all around of the Monitor series.
Since I've heard the 5As I can only assume that the only REAL difference with those is the greater cabinet volume and deeper bass that the 7s put out. Otherwise I would imagine that 5As should sound A LOT like the upper range of the 7s and, theoretically should image just as well?
Sounds like you're having some fun there!
