Room Setup

Hey guys,

So in trying to get my room set up a bit better for two channel listening and I'm looking for some input before I begin moving things around this evening. I have two medium sized bookshelf speakers and a small velodyne subwoofer and I'm interested in ideas on where they may sound/image best. I set my speakers up only 20 degrees apart as I use an electronic crosstalk cancellation gizmo. I currently have the speakers in the corner where the 160" and 90.5" walls meet (pulled out a bit) and at 45 degrees to he corner. My chair is back about 85" from the speakers which puts my right side near the point where the 45" and 28" walls meet. Things sound okay but I'm having trouble getting things to image properly and evenly. With some adjustments the soundstage extends very far to the right,'but not far far to my left, and visa versa. Any brilliant ideas on where to put my speakers? Assume nothing else needs to be in the room except to medium sized bookies on stands, a small sub, and a chair. Thanks

Oh - and the door when open sits flat against the 90.5" wall and the 86" wall has a closet that extends two feet beyond the drawing that has wooden doors. The green thing is supposed to be a window.

I'm thinking of trying the speakers in front of the 86" closet with a large blanket covering the closet doors. The window already has a thick curtain covering it.

I would probably try setting them on the 160 wall, about 2 feet in from each corner. It may be a little wide, just guessing here, but that is where I would start. That wall will be the best option you have to fill the room with sound, as opposed to a sound/noise mixture. I could be way off here, but that's where I would start.

Are you able to post what type furniture is set up in this room? Or is the room a blank slate merely for setting up a two channel system with a sweet spot to sit in?

Yep - room's a blank slate. Although I see my grammar suffers when I type from my phone - I have two medium sized bookshelf speakers, not "to speakers".

I would try them on 150" wall and play with placement but I am thinking start about 3' from each corner. You dont provide any details about the speakers like are they ported in rear or sealed?

Get sound panels if you can.

After doing so and seeing you are using bookies on stands I would try putting them on the 150' wall about 2' in from the corner and closet angled about 15 deg inward. Depending on whether your speakers are front or rear ported would dictate how far from the back wall I'd pull them but if rear I'd pull 1ft out and if front I'd go 2ft out for my base setup and tweek from there moving them up and back until the best response is found.

I'm also assuming the 86" wall with the closet is the whole wall and has solid closet doors closed? This would make that back 150" wall closer to only 10ft wide from corner to closet door.

If you like your setup from the 160" (13.3 ft) wall I believe your 45 deg angle to be too sharp especially if your speakers are close to the corner and will actually hurt your imaging imo. I also have no idea what having your speakers 20 degrees apart means. If you want to stay in this configuration I would try pulling a minimum of 2 ft from each side wall and 1ft from the 160" wall and try toeing in 15 deg to start.

Personally though, I think using the 150" wall will provide better imaging if that 86" wall IS a closet with doors that can be closed. This would give you about 10ft of width to work with but more depth to work with on your chair positioning. I would start by positioning the chair in the middle of the room equal distance from the 160" wall and the 28"/45" corner with the front of the chair parallel to the line from that corner to the 160" wall. You can then tweek again with room to pull it back. Using this setup also affords some space behind you which I think may help with the imaging.

That's my .02 anyway, good luck and let us know how it goes. Changing things around to try and get the best sound is part of the fun even if the wife thinks you're crazy. Some women just don't get it and never will....their loss.

Here is a slightly better drawing. My speakers only need to be 20 degrees apart - meaning 1/3 the distance between them when compared to a normal stereo setup which places speakers 60 degrees apart.
