Sony 400-Disc Player

All,
I'm considering buying the Sony DVP-CX985V 400 Disc player within the next 6 months.
Are there any other mega-disk players out there? Is the Sony a decent unit and can it be purchased anywhere for less than $400? Do these kinds of players tend to scratch DVD's due to their change-out capability?
Thanks in advance.

Kberg - If you are into the mega-changer, and the Sony in particuler, try and get into the ES class changer. It's build quality and DACS are much better than the lower end line of equipment in this category. The ES line also carries a 5 Year warranty.
I have not heard of scratching issues. The only problems that I have heard about the Sony is, size....its quite large, but you probably already know that. I have also heard some cases of the disc library that you create, via PS/2 keyboard, being wiped out for no reason. This has been fixed per Sony, and I have not heard any recent cases of this happening.
The Sony CDP-M333ES is often under $375, and has had good reveiws. The CDP-M555ES is often $475.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Excellent! Thanks, doro.Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

You might want to ask around the forum to see if anyone has a similar used one they might want to sell...
madmaxVinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -

I have both a CDP CX200 and a CDP CX400 and have been very happy with both. As Doro says, The ES line is better and carries a longer warranty but both of these "mainline" units have worked well and performed flawlessly for me, FWIW
I just reread your post and saw that you were looking at DVD/CD combos. Mine are CD only......sorry. -
Doro is correct. Try and get the ES model. I have the Sony cx8500 that holds 200 DVDs and two cx 255 CD players that hold 200 CD's each. I never heard of any scratching issues and have had none myself.
They are big and I have broken off two optical connectors and damaged one RCA jack while moving these units around on the shelf. Just be carefull when pushing them around on the shelf.
I'd buy new, not used. Too many moving parts.
I wish Sony made a top notch 400 unit player.
I'd get the M555es model.
Shuffle mode is great fun. And track delete is power. -
I have the model that Doro has shown above. Personally I love it. No problems, no skipping, no scratching. And you are able to use a standard CPU keyboard to insert individual CD info. I have had two blackouts, and the CD info is still in memory.
Not to bad of a product that Sony has put out. This is refering to the CDP-CX455. -
KB, if you're looking for a combination CD/DVD megachanger under $400, the 985 is about it and should be fine(note the September Sound & Vision review). Here's a few sources.

I have 2 sony CDP CX200's that I use in my system. I have had both for about 5 or 6 years and they have been great for playing CDs. No scratching issues and the ability to have all my CD's available is great. The ES line would probably be better, but I can't really complain about the mainline players. When I sit down for a serious listening session, I still use my Denon 2900, but that isn't the norm. I will also agree that these things are big. Make sure you have enough room in your stereo rack.
Good luck.

I know it is not the DVD player but I have the CDP-CX355 300 disc mega changer and I love it.__________________
