I am in the market for a new dac and was wondering if anyone has heard both the W4S Dac2 and the Oppo BDP105's dac section? I know they both use ESS ES9018 chips, and I like the sound of the 105, but am wondering if the stand alone Dac2 is better from what people have heard? I will be using a it with a Sonos connected to my NAS for music. Thanks.

I can't answer that, but the Oppo is also a Bluray player, so a part of the price is for electronics you don't need. A pure DAC for the same price as the Oppo should work better since that is its sole purpose. On the other hand, with the Oppo you have a spare Bluray player.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

That is part of the appeal of the Oppo, since this it will be going in my dual purpose rig. Forgot to mention that part.

I own both, and have both in my rig, you can't go wrong with either one. Just go with the one that fits your needs best, and be happy..
