Just went out for a smoke and living the next town over from Gettysburg it was kinda strange listening to the cannon fire and gun shots going on with the start of the 150th re-enactments.I guess i'll get a taste of what it was like over the next 10 days or so of what it looked and sounded like.
A little eery i must say.
But very cool to be here at this time.

Don't think what you are hearing comes anywhere close to what actually happend on that ground during those three days. I read that vultures still come to that battlefield to this day.....is that true?

It is true. When my son was in Scouts we got a permit to camp in McMillan woods a few times and saw them every time.

I don't know why other countries didn't meddle in our business back then and stop us.
Like now we can't leave other countries alone now and let them resolve their own problems.

During peak Festivals/weeks/weekends in Galveston are bad about gridlock.

We just grab all you need and hunker down or leave like it it was a hurricane.....grab some music and enjoy

positive side is a big blast for economy as long as the clean up doesn't crater the budget.

You can tend to get lax about it when it's right under your nose.
The camping with Boy Scouts was amazing because we had a friend who has been a reenactor for 20+ years who camped with us in period clothes and tent etc and led the daily tours.
    Amazing stories!

Having a guided tour in a small group by one of the Park's tour guides is probably the best way to learn more of the detail of the actual battle. They are walking tours through the actual battle fields and take several hours. You will need three days to do it right. Do your research first, read some books, study some maps, then get the tour. I've never seen the battle re-inactments and I'm sure they are fun.

I have always liked and been a student of that period in our history. Having spent my teenage years around Richmond Virginia, one can become quite familiar with all the historic sites there. I have roamed the fields and found some neat artifacts that I still have. My friend and I skipped school on numerous days to do that, and some of the artifacts we donated to the Battle Abby in Richmond where they are on display to this day. Hoping to get to Gettysburg in the near future when there is less going on to check it out!!

Fantastic fishing you gents have up there, that's another claim to fame. The only bad part of the whole deal was Quebec. Should have sent those French back home. But....they did help us too along the way so I shouldn't say nuthin'.

However we did manage to sneak New Orleans away from them, what a deal eh ? "Give it to the stupid americans, it's below sea level anyway. Take a case of rum and lets get out of here."

We have a Ton of sights here also, lots of battles fought around here.
National sights, ect. not as big as most, but they are still finding relics in the middle of now where around these parts.
Interesting time in history to say the least.
My dad is pretty much obsessed with that period/conflict, as are others.
I have read up on it plenty myself off and on, very interesting characters in that war.
The death toll is just unfathomable to me.
