Problem playing records

So a few months ago I purchased a cheap techtronics turn table and bought a new needle cartage for it. I have a small collection of records i have been collecting and cleaned two of them with a damp cloth and let them dry. Than used a soft brush to make sure no dust was on them before starting to play.

Here is the problem, no matter which record i have tried after a few seconds of playback the sound gets muffled ans scratchy. Upon inspection the needle has collected a good amount of dust.

What am I doing wrong?

    Playing records.

Just kidding. It sounds like they aren't as clean as you think they are, and the environment is dusty. Records are like dust magnets.

Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

    LOL maybe that's it!

Do I need to do a more in depth cleaning of them?

    Hi baf,
You're going to need to use something a bit better at cleaning. There's the "Discwasher" at $15.00, or the "In the Groove" cleaner at $20.00. But the one you really should consider is the "Spin-Clean" at $80.00. If the previous owners had been fairly meticulous then a damp cloth would be okay, but if the records were not kept well then they need cleaning.

That's what I have also. But that sounds like from your description of your turntable it may be a little out of your budget. You can gently wash and rinse them over the kitchen sink and dry them with a soft lint free cloth.

There are alot of different methods of cleaning a record. Utube has alot of information you can watch to find which way best meets your budget/needs. Try not to get center/label wet. Make sure after every album there is no build up on needle. I inspect mine with a flashlight and fine needle brush each use. Albums if not washed well, will collect build up in the grooves. So that needs to be addressed.
Once you have it down you will enjoy it alot. There is alot on the internet nowwa days that youll find very useful. ENJOY your albums--
