Another question about surround placement

 Ok. Here is a rough diagram of my 14'4" x 13'0" TV room. I run a 5.1 (or 5.2 if you will ) setup. CS1, M60's, M30's and dual PSW 505 subs. I never gave a rats about WAF but with our new furniture, and our 2 year old, this room is set up roughly how she wants it.

Living room.png

In the red ovals are the Monitor 30 speakers, on 24" stands, also in those areas are objects (small toy box, floor lamp) that are moveable. They are at ear level when sitting in the recliners. But obviously one recliner/listener blocks one and vise versa for the other chair.

Question: should I face the speakers at a 90 degree angle parallel with the back wall behind the recliners (which is actually the front of the house, including a very large bay window)Or at an angle? Should I put them in the corners or out a bit? I really can't hear them very often as I watch mostly sports and dramas and like I said I have a two year old and in a small room, this system plays very, very loud so it's mainly at about a 3 of a volume scale of 1-10.

I will be standing by for any advice or additional info. I know I should continue trying different positions along with running the Yamaha receiver's setup mic and using a DB meter. Been there done that. The best sound? Hung high on the wall (the small wall in front of the entrance doorway, and directly across on the opposite wall, but the speaker stands are staying. No more holes in the walls, and I already fixed them. The wife likes the stands better. So stands it is. Lastly I must keep the chairs near the back wall/window. It is what it is. Small room. I would love to dump the chairs and drop the couch in the center, but that won't happen.

Any friendly help is appreciated.

I always angled mine to the listening area.

Also putting the subwoofers right next to each other might actually be detrimental to their output - someone else can chime in on it.
    Main Surround -
    Epson 8350 Projector/ Elite Screens 120" / Pioneer Elite SC-35 / Sunfire Signature / Focal Chorus 716s / Focal Chorus CC / Polk MC80 / Polk PSW150 sub

It shows you have the fronts next to the tv. Have you tried bringing them out a hair & slight toe in ? Just wondering..im taking it you sit in recliner mostly for movies/music

Yes, I toe them in and pull them out a lot when the house is empty. 120lb lab/rottweiler, 80 pound husky, and 30lb toddler have knocked them over and required me to order a new woofer and grill at @ $70.

The subs gained 8db's of output at 50% volume and -4.5 output level on the Rx. I like bass, believe me when I tell you, I have had them in every configuration and my poor, surgery scarred knees have done many sub crawls. Because of the couch they are "transparent" or well blended 90% of the time, and when I crank it I lose drop ceiling tiles in the basement and it rattles the awnings on my neighbor's houses. :)

As far as listening position, if I put them against the rear corners and angle them @ 35 degrees, that is aimed at the position but one recliner always blocks the trajectory of one speaker and vice versa. But, I think in the name of sacrifice that might be my only option. I know pointing at the listening position is best, but the listening position isn't optimal.

    Thanks guys.

Perhaps... If anything I would stack them, either way looks like he's on the right track here.

Yes sir. Im not going to run off and say I have tons of great equipment, I get good deals because of side jobs I work. However, I built this setup with this (the family/heavy traffic) in mind. Solid ent. cabinet, Solid Panasonic ST screen, Apple TV, Monitor speakers from Ebay. I also have setups in the livingroom, man cave, garage/billiards room and a basement home theater project. I am well set audio wise, but this is the "mini van" of systems. I do not have any tube amps or $2000 a piece speakers, but setups I am happy with.

Like I said this one gets the most use, TV/family/toy room. It's a room we are not afraid to eat in, nap in, play in, or watch movies together in. So, I am trying to optimize it. I am messing with the setup now and I am enjoying the results. I wish this receiver did the dual/multiple seating position setup like my Marantz. But it doesn't. :/ I don't think.

Thanks!, Really! My front sound stage sounds great. Stacking them made the top subwoofer so noticeable even crossed over at 4o hz on the Rx that I found myself tightening all of the screws on the plate amp. It also didn't have the low bass output that it does now. See above, EVERY spot of free space in my TV room has had the subwoofer located there. This spot is awesome for this room. Even people seated around the room agreed.

Sounds like you've done the tough part (sub crawl), glad to hear that you tried to stack them, after I posted that I thought to myself that it may not work out great with the 505's. (If they have too much vibration) A lot of people had had good luck doing that with stacked dual-opposed subs. Nice work, it's time to sit back and enjoy it!

Thanks! I think the current setup with the woofers within a foot of the couch, is what makes it work. It acts like a nice bass trap and really smoothes out any rough spots especially in the barely audible (for me) low range. I know every room is different. I had Paradigm 10" subs in opposing corners when the room had a sectional. It was the best sound for those subs, (10" 100 watts RMS) but for these, this is it unless I move the TV. Thanks guys!

The only problem I having is the L surround (@ 5 feet away) is just too loud and has an echo because in reality it is probably only 3 1/2 feet from my left ear . The rest are dialed in nicely.
