I sold a parasound pre on ebay last week or so for 200 shipped. It went to cali and with shipping paypal and ebay fees, it was well over 50 bucks. Anyway, the buyer is claiming that the remote isnt working. It was working fine when i shipped it. He seems like a reasonable enough fellow, but wants a partial refund to help pay for a new remote. I offered to give him a full refund if he shipped it back to me. Does this.seem fair or am i being a ****?

Sounds familiar. I recently shipped a Parasound amp back east and the guy claimed channel 5 wasn't working. It was fine when I sent it, and I was about to offer him a full refund to ship it back to me when he finally discovered it was a problem with the pre-out on his receiver. Hard to tell the knowledge level of people when you ship. So no, I don't think what you're offering is unfair. Has he tried emailing or calling Parasound? Assuming he's changed the batteries and checked for any stuck buttons...

He says he has tried everything. Its a pretty simple remote. I am.thinking a contact came loose during shipment. I would hate to think shananigans and i try to give people the benefit of doubt.

PayPal will refund the money if and only if he ships the entire item back to you. PayPal doesn't go for partial refunds if he tries that route. You are being completely fair and following PayPal/eBay's guidelines.

I sold a perfectly working tonearm to a guy in Canada, only for him to claim its not working, I told him to send it back for a full refund, I get it back and it was all jacked up, well it came out he took it to a shop to be modded by some other douch bag to his turntable. Well it didn't work out how he hoped and wanted his money back, I fought it through eBay, and PayPal, that I refused to refund this guy his money.. Here is the sad thing, eBay ate it, the douch bag got his money back, I didn't lose my money, and I still have the tonearm to this day.

That douch bag should have never got his money back..

Terrible. I believe the guy about the remote in this case, but it worked when i shipped it and i packed everything great. He could buy a remote and still get a good deal if he wants. I have spent enough in this transaction.

I know...i have sold and bought things here without a hitch. Had it listed here for a little while with no bites. Sold in about three hours on ebay. Its weird that a remote would just stop working. I gave him an out and he wants to keep it.

I think you did the right thing. Some people will claim something isn't working and ask for a partial refund just to lower their cost. The only way to know it's not shenanigans is to have them ship the entire thing back for a refund.

I've noticed on some of the pieces of older test gear being sold on eBay that the seller will have a link to a youtube video showing the item being used. They'll have a closeup of the serial number and show the overall condition then have the unit functioning, making a measurement or whatever it is supposed to be doing. This helps sell the unit and makes it harder to claim it doesn't work after it gets delivered. Maybe show the level of packing used?
I'm glad your sale worked out.

Assuming no shenanigans on the part of the buyer, you might consider his scenario: Would YOU want to pay return shipping on an item that you received broken?

Just offering perspective from personal experience. I bought a receiver on ebay, and the remote wasn't functional. The seller gave me the same deal when contacted, but I wasn't happy about it, I didn't think I should pay to ship back a broken item. In the end, I just ate the cost of a new remote, but didn't think the situation was fair.

how did you pack/ wrap the remote? if it was in bubble wrap with the buttons squashed on all 3 days of its UPS trip ,maybe that was its death! and both of you are right it did work when you sent it and how it doesn't. To get people to buy stuff on ebay they make the seller as responsible as a department store, the store makes a profit ... so no big deal. on ebay the only person that makes any money is ebay on all points of the transaction even on the pay pal end. this has become the down side of selling on ebay. more of my unused stuff is going in the trash so I don't have to deal with this.
as to you situation since it is going to be $50 to get it back either find him another on ebay or after he send you the remote back give him his partial refund

Sounds like it is mostly worked out with the buyer, but I would ask him if he has any universal remotes that he might be able to test with. If the universal works, but the original Parasound remote doesn't work, then its possible that the remote was damaged, but in my experience, that rarely happens. Many times, the problem happens inside the preamp. Especially if UPS dropped it hard. Even with good packing, a hard drop can cause internal circuit damage. If it turns out that it is just the remote, I'd offer to buy him one and send it to him. That would be a way to test if he is just trying to get money back or if he really has a bad remote. If he says that it doesn't work with the universal, I'd make a claim with the shipper.

BTW, I disagree with DSkip, who said that a remote shouldn't be a deal breaker. If I buy an item that is supposed to work with a remote and it is supposed to include a working remote, that i what I expect. I prefer not to live without remote control of my equipment and I am not alone. I like to make subtle volume changes and/or mute frequently during my listening sessions. If I had to buy a remote (which for me doesn't usually happen since I use universals), then I would probably be upset, at least somewhat.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Yes, i agree, i would want a working remote too. That is why i gave him the option of a full refund. Those remotes are around 65.00. I am not buying him a new remote. As i stated before, everything was working.fine when i shipped it. He opted to just keep it, which tells me that either the remote works just fine or he can live without one. I beleive he did.say he would.try a universal.
