I'm wondering if anybody would like to comment on the difference or preferences of DVI vs. Component cables? I'm currently using the DVI cable for 1080i but have not tried the component.

Thanks
Dan

I have not used these yet since I have not purchased a new tv but I understand that DVI is the way of the future and I would insist my new tv had DVI. DVI offers pure digital to digital with no analog in the middle. DVI should be better.

There is no visible difference between the two. (Yes, I've used both.) DVI exists because of copyright control issues.

Ya, DVI is probably not going to BE the future. Thier are like 4 other digital connections that are in the mix of things. They are all digital computer pin type connections thought. DVI is more of a stepping stone right now.

i can understand the need to continually improve video quality.. we all want the biggest and best looking picture from our display... no matter what type it is.

but why oh why do the makers of electronis tease us with this or that "gimmick" if you will and not make it the standard? Lets find the best possible connector and stick with it for petes sake.. don't release a different connector every 12 months. crikey! that bugs the sheite out of me. I bet by the time i purchase and TV with DVI input.. the next best and much improved hook up will just be coming out. UGH!

    Well here goes.

i got a new Tee Vee over the weekend. :)

Zenith 32" 4:3 with HDTV tuner built it. it displays, 480i&p, 720p, and 1080i. It's an amazing looking tv. I hooked up a indoor antenna.. to receive ota DTV signals. Wow. true HDTV (1080i) is so sharp and the colors are so vivid and jump out at you...

The set has a DVI input too.. i'd like to get a DVD player with a DVI output... so that everything stays digital. I just read that soon the next version of digital hook up connector will be coming out. it will carry audio too... whereby DVI is video only.

    Thanks for the info.

I guess the type of antenna to be used will depend on how far you are from the transmitting TV antenna.

I just read a little bit about the DVI and I think it is only for copyright protection (I don't remember the site and can't remember everything they said). It seems the movie companies are trying to save there butts by encoding the signal from (and to) new players. Almost all companies that make DVD players already have players capable of a HD picture (blue laser). They are even capable of a 1080p output. The problem is that they come out with a player, they will come out with a recorder. Then why buy a movie when you can record an HD one from HBO? So any HDTV over 2 years old will probably be obsolite in the very near future.

well i don't know about obsolite... in two years... DVI I think will be around for short time.. the next generation of that is something like HDMI.. which will be backward compatible with DVI.

There just needs to be some kind of standards for HDTV. and there isn't from the consumers stand point.

In my local area.. the three local network affilates are as follows.
local NBC broadcasts their DTV singnal in 480p, ABC is 720p, and CBS is 1080i. why didn't the FCC make sure everyone was broadcasting at 1080i?? come on the goverment needs to set some standards and stick with em.
