I've seen on several forums that for anything other than hdtv-- s video gives the best picture. with hdtv component or the newer computer style hook up is best. I would like to know if it is possible to hook s video and component at the same time.
how do you guys that have hdtv hook up for the best regular and hdtv signals? I'll be running one cable to set top box from antenna, the other will be direct tv hi def to set top box, then to receiver. all help will be greatly appreciated---- rex

Rex, the information you describe is incorrect. S-video isn't the best non-HDTV connection; even there, component connections are slightly better, although the difference may not be enough to justify the expense of the three component cables. Assuming that you'll have HDTV and progressive scan output from a DVD player to display in 480p mode on your TV, you should use the component connections.

I have been through many iterations on this matter and have finally settled even though it adds another remote to my system. I no longer use my h/k 520 as a vidio switch even though it is more convenient I figured my vidio quality will be best without an additional piece of equipment in the vidio path.

I have iterated between s-vidio and component and am convinced that compenent is better than s. So my final config is as follows:

Direct TV Triple LNB Oval dish RJ6 to a Zenith HD SAT520

    Vidio:
HD SAT520 Component vidio to the component in on my Sony HD57"

    Audio:
HDSAT520 TOS Link to an Audio Alchemy DTI
Audio Alchemy DTI Coax to my HK 520 for DD/PCM

    Hope this helps

Use Component over S if available. Use DVI (pure digital transfer) over Component if available.

John and Dan are correct newpolkman...component video cables better s-video cables, especially if they are pure silver. If you have a connection on your DVD player, Digital HDTV box, or TV...DVI would be the way to go. I don't think we'll have to worry about HDMI cables for a while...soon to become a new standard with audio and video on one cable...
