I was wondering what people here have done to treat their room? I am thinking about buying acoustical panels. what's worked best for you?

Get a good mic and download a copy of REW and see what issues you have and where. Then you can move speakers and subs around and find the best location for them.
    Absolute corruption empowers absolutely.

What's your listening space like? You can build your own absorbers for relatively cheap for starters and begin to treat for RFZ.

I think most of us are limited by the reality of our spaces. Do you have corners you can treat with "superchunks"? Places you can stick bass traps? Ceiling/wall interfaces your are willing to lose?

General rule is to treat the back wall with absorption and possibly some diffusion, especially if it's close to your head, and the creme de la creme is to have diffusion and absorption - but experts note you really can get by with just absorption.

    Look into RFZ first.

I remember reading your thread, nice work! Looks look you addressed the major issues, and everything is sounding much better.

I'm considering some diffusion on my back side walls but some have advised my available spaces might be too high up to be effective. They do meet the criteria of being 10+ft away from my listening space as diffusion can cause lobing and other audible artifacts.

My point being that, you can actually introduce detrimental room treatments e.g. too much absorption and/or diffusion in wrong places/uneeded.

    cheers!

I do not have experience treating my HT room but wanted to offer a source for acoustical panels materials. http://www.acousticalsolutions.com/

Treating a room is a very good idea, but, IMHO a receiver with a good calibration system can dramatically reduce the cost of such treating.

    Another vote for GIK.

I've tried it both ways and prefer acoustic treatments to correction.

I've had folks treat their rooms after hearing what they can do at my place, just by removing and re-installing them with music playing. A friend, Blake, posted his results here.

My west wall setup. There are some GIK Tri traps in corners that you can't see in the pic. You should hear Sofie Needs a Ladder with them and without them.

I've got 6 GIK panels and 4 GIK corner traps in a 12x12 room. Difference was jaw-dropping
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Also, don't underestimate the effects of cloth vs. leather on your furniture. I knew I'd hear a difference when I changed to cloth in my room, but was unprepared for such a noticeable improvement. I treated my room with fiberglass panels. The pictures are on here somewhere.

I noticed an improvement when I wrapped my chair headrest with towels. The leather gave me some nasty reflections right at my ears
