long time lurker, first time poster. thanks to everyone for making this such a great learning experience.

Picked up a pair of 10As from craigslist for $80

They're in great shape (nicked back corners is the only cosmetic issue). The weird thing is that the guy had one of the tweeters replaced at some point, so there are two different tweeters: the silver one with the Polk logo on it and the flat black one (peerles I believe, though it could be one of the fake peerless?). Should I replace both for good measure?

They sound great for the most part. The soundstage is large and the presentation is VERY forward with fantastic mids (vocals sound phenomenal), but the highs are a bit crispy and some of the lows are a very subdued. Imaging is a tad bit lacking, but for $80 beggars most certainly can't be chosers.

Side note: when demoing speakers, why do craigslist sellers always focus only on how LOUD they can get? Makes me doubt how well they were treated.

Congratulations! Sounds like you got a great deal!

Without pictures it's hard to judge but it sounds like you may have one 10A with a Peerless and one with a Polk SL1000 tweeter. These are different tweeters. I haven't heard an sl1000 but I have to assume that they sound considerably different from the Peerless. I know the later SL2000 tweeters are much brighter than the earlier Peerless (Have had both). I wouldn't necessarily replace both. I would recommend trying to find another Peerless tweeter if you can. Otherwise, you can upgrade to the Polk-authorized replacements for Polk Monitor tweeters, which are the RDO-194 and -198. I think for a 10A this would require some changes to the crossover and perhaps some cutting on the cabinet, but I am not sure - there are likely some threads on this forum that can help you out.

As a precaution, I would recommend you purchase some JB Weld at the hardware store and apply it to the magnets of all 4 speakers in your cabinets. You can perform a search on this forum to learn more - there are plenty of posts. The Polk Monitor speakers of this vintage are notorious for having slipping magnets which can cause the speakers to fail. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I've had speakers slip their magnets from car travel, being moved around, and tipping over on a carpeted floor - it doesn't take much...

But most of all - enjoy!

Polk Monitor 10As are fantastic speakers. Congratulations. You will love them.

In my opinion, the best tweeters for them are the original Peerless tweeters. I have 2 pair of Monitor 10s with the Peerless tweeters and love the sound. I would highly recommend you get matching Peerless tweeters for your Monitor 10As.

In any event, you should have two tweeters that are the same, not a different tweeter in each speakers. So, whatever tweeter you decide on for these, the first thing you need to do is to make sure you have the same model tweeter in each speaker so you have matching sound from each speaker.

You got a great price on those and they are great speakers.
