Looking for advice on amp service

Anybody have EBC Electronics do repair work for you? http://www.ebcelectronics.com/

Though working fine, I'm looking to have my Adcom GFA-555 gone through. For an estimated $300 + shipping costs they will replace all small electrolytic caps and the big power caps, upgrade the input jacks, adjust DC offset(mine is currently not bad @ 33mV & 20mV) & just give it a general refurbishing.

I know Big Sky seems to be the preferred shop to deal with when it comes to Adcom, but their basic service, which as far as I can tell does not include replacing the power caps, starts @ $399. Combine that with the more expensive shipping due to distance & I'm just not willing to spend that much on the amp.

Any other recommendations?

-Dave

Hello Dave, you might try Tom at Vintage hifi of Pittsburgh. He did my Belles before I bought it,it has been a great amp.I believe Endersshadow had him do his Carver as well if I remember correctly.Just a thought,a phone call cant hurt.

+1 on Vintage HiFi. I visited their shop not long ago with Carl (schwarcw). It was like a trip through time with all the various gear they had there. Nice folks with know how.

Why not just sell it as is, take that plus the coin you were going to spend on refurbishing and try something different. Like maybe a B&K amp, used Conrad Johnson, Belles, Parasound, etc.

That's probably what I would do but what do I know.

Thought about selling it, but I'm kind of attached to it. Was one of those amps I wanted as a teen but couldn't afford. No it's not the best amp in the world, but I do like it & want to keep it functioning properly.

If the Adcom is working fine, keep running it til you notice something amiss and send her in to get the shop of your choice to do the work. Those Adcoms are really decent amps and will probably last another 20 years. Doubt you'll find any new $400.00 power amps that can match it and last 20 years.
