bi-amping with a Yamaha RX-A2020 or Denon AVR-4311CI

I've read that bi-amping is a joke, but is that in all situations or just some? I'm considering the two AVRs in the title, and each says that I can bi-amp my front speakers and still have 7.1 surround. Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks so much for any responses.

When using 2 outputs from the same AVR, it makes very little to no difference. Your AVR has only so much available power, and the more speakers you add, the less power per channel you add. So, if you use 2 channel to power your front mains, each section may be getting 2 signals, but the availble power, in this situation, is pretty much meaningless.

Personally, I would recomend using the single traditional wire configuration, and save up for an amp if you want more power. Then you can use those remaining 2 channels to run 9.x instead of 7.x.

Thanks, rpf65. So maybe I should save some money on the AVR with a 7.1 system and spend the difference on a 2 channel amp.

I wouldn't start spending money on an amp, just yet. I would suggest you listen to those 2 AVR's, an more if possible, to see which brand(s) you like. They all sound a little different, so that may be what you dislike about your system. An amp isn't always a solution.

I just don't want to see you spending money, just to spend money.

Whichever AVR you decide on, just make sure it has pre-outs. An amp may be your ultimate solution, and it's best to be prepared.
