Alright here is the deal, ive got a friend that just bought a new 65' Mitsubishi HDTV and he bought a Samsung HD receiver to get his directtv through. I was over there helping him hook all his stuff up and i ran into something i couldnt figure out. Ill couldnt get a picture. This is how i had it hooked up:
1.coaxial in to HD receiver from satellite, then component out from HD Receiver directly to component in on TV.
im almost positive i had the right input selected on the TV. im not a ****. See the screen would go black, like it was detecting the receiver hooked up, just no picture, all black.
i also tried just hooking it up through A/V, coax, and svideo.
so if somebody who either has a HD receiver or someone who knows how they work better than i do could please help me out because all i can come up with is maybe he has a faulty receiver. alrhough i have a realy strong feeling im just not turning something on or making the right input choices..please help me out.
oh and by the way he had it hooked up and working before, and it went out on him when he watched a tape from his VCR..

I would start off by hooking up a DVD player to the tv using the component video inputs and making sure the DVD plays.
That will eliminate the tv for sure. Then you are down to the receiver or not getting a signal from the satellite. Another thing could be the splicer used for the satellite signal. Some of the splicers will not allow a signal to go through. I had this problem once and bought a splicer designed for satellite use.
Hope this helps some.

yea i did that. i hooked up the dvd and it worked fine, then i hooked up a regular DirectTV receiver and it worked fine. so its gotta be the receiver or im just not setting something on the TV to receive the DTV signal?

Well shucks... looks like it may be the receiver then again....
my experience runs out here because although I have a Mitsibishi HDTV "ready" tv, I have hooked up regular satellite but not HDTV satellite.
My tv is a HDTV ready monitor though. Does his tv have a HDTV tuner built - in?? Perhaps it could be a setting in the tv that one has to disable if using another HDTV receiver??
I don't know.. sorry bud. Looks like you covered the basics. I know that there are some folks on here who do have HDTV so they'll sure to chime in soon.

Sky,
does he have the triple LNB sat? Logically, it shouldn't matter, but since you tried a regular DTV receiver already, I am assuming the HDTV tuner is looking for SAT C location/LNB C. On HDTV receiver, in addition of setting up LNB A and B, you have also to adjust C. The other thing that need to be completed, is to call DTV to register the new receiver, got to mention that it's a HDTV receiver so they can activated the card. One last thing, after registration, you need to reset the receiver (remove the cord, wait for several minutes, plug the power, and rescan the channel setup).
I am definitely not an expert in HDTV/DTV setup, but, these were what I went thru when I activated my HD receiver. Good luck!I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.
