Peerless tweet?

I have been looking for some Monitor 7s or 10s with Peerless tweeters and found the ones pictured below today. I emailed the owner asking which tweeter they have but haven't heard back yet. I think they are Peerless but it's not a great angle to view them from, and I thought those of you with a lot more experience with the various tweeter versions might be able to identify them for me.

    that picture shows a peerless tweeter. it's black and has a small hole in the middle= peerless.

    i believe that's and early model of speaker too because it has foam on the driver edges. early models used peerless tweeters.

    Thanks, I thought they were. They are advertised for sale with a Velodyne sub for $145 but were advertised a couple months ago for $75 by themselves so that's what I am offering for them since I don't need the sub right now. I paid the same for the 7C's I have now which have the SL2500 tweeter and want to compare them to the Peerless ones.

    Haven't heard from the owner yet who didn't have a phone number listed.

    I don't have a sub (I route the .1 to my Monitor 10B's), but if I were to get one, it would be a Velodyne. Don't know how you feel about subs, but that's not a bad price for the combo.

    Yeah, the 7's I have now have a nice veneer on them also. I sold a set of 10's with the vinyl coating and they were not nearly as nice. Still looked good, but I have always liked the look of wood.

    Still haven't heard back from the owner yet though. Could be he's away today, or could be he doesn't want to break up the pair. Thanks for the advice about the tweeters and the Velodyne.

    I am picking them up this evening. $75 for the pair. Assuming they are in good shape. I won't be able to listen to them, so hopefully there's no issues with the drivers. The owner said he hasn't used them in months but will hook them up to check them out before selling them.

    Looking forward to A-B ing them with the pair that has SL2500 tweeters. Not sure my ancient ears are up to discerning subtle differences though.

    Just for the record -those arent' really early Monitor 7s (although they do indeed have Peerless silk dome tweeters). The earliest version of the 7 had an 8" (not 10") uncoated paper PR. I also think that the earliest Monitor Series Models 7 and 10 did not have the holes poked in their Peerlesse! (see the class photo from a 1976 brochure below and the photo of a very early Monitor Series Model 10):

    Well, the good news is I had no trouble getting them and they work great. The not as good news is that they are vinyl coated since they are the earlier model 7. The vinyl is all intact, one corner on one speaker is dinged, and the top of one has scratches, but they aren't bad. Maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10.

    Haven't had much chance to listen to them but did throw some Led Zepplin in and thought the highs were more detailed than with my 7C's. Also, and I don't know if this makes sense, but the lows seemed to go a bit deeper. More listening ahead for these before I can decide the differences.

    I did not take the C's off their stands to try these out on them, but the stands definitely make a difference in overall soundstage. And maybe that had something to do with the lows since the new ones were sitting on the floor.

    The new ones are going in the bedroom in a 3.0 system and will be used more for music than the ones in the home theater setup downstairs. I have a Yamaha RX-V373 upstairs. Will have to look for something better to drive them one day.

    They still sound good, but I guess mods will make them better. Too bad I have no experience with any of them. I keep reading about them on this site but that's nearly the same as seeing it done.

    Those look very good cosmetically - hardly even any dust! New caps and resistors are in order if the Xovers have never been touched. Trey (VR3) lives in or near your home town - I'm sure he'd be willing to help you out . . or you could do it.

    All your doing is replacing parts. Seems a bit daunting when you first look at it, but really you just get out the soldering iron, remove a cap (or resistor) [one at a time], and replace with the same value only with a higher quality film cap. Also, if you do only one Xover at a time you have the other one for reference if you get a bit turned around. The monitor 7 Xovers are one of the simpler ones too so it'd be a good one to get your feet wet.

    And of course you have the resources of the forum here to get all your questions answered.

    A good thought. I knew Trey was in this area someplace. Maybe I could learn from the master. The last time I used a soldering iron it was in 8th grade and you had to heat it with a torch.

    JIMBO18--little late on the post but im glad you were able to hook up with the seller. And those look great. Some of the feedback on upgrades is helpful as i too have never done that. I just replaced xovers for the first time a month ago. So its all new to me too...but hey. Those look Awesome & i hope they sound great..enjoy :) randy

    Thanks, Randy, very happy with the purchase so far. I may risk working on the crossovers one day, but not right now.

    How did your upgrade work out for you? And aren't you on "vacation" now? :wink:
