Ok, well i have taken the plunge (or at least part of the plunge) and bought an HDTV (mitsubishi 65" (platinumPlus)Widescreen/no integrated reciever). My old TV is a Mitsubishi 50" (Non HDTV) 4:3 aspect. I need help figuring out what my stuff is gonna look like on the new set.
My questions are all comparison. I want to know how different the stuff i view everyday will look on the new TV vs. the old. Keep in mind that at the moment I do not have an HDTV reciever (hence the "part of the plunge"). I'll list my stuff as it is currently.
OLD TV VS. NEW SHINY TV FIGHT!!!
PS2 (on component Video)
XBOX (ditto)
GameCube (Svideo)
DVD Player (component but not progressive scan)
Your standard everyday cable TV
BTW, Thanks for any input!!!

I know the wise forum sages have some info fro me.

It will look wider...

I said I was an idiot, not retarded. I was more specifically reffering to what resolution (480i, 480p etc etc) that I was going to get.
-
from a progressive scan DVD-480p
from a 480i source-upconverts to 480p
HDTV scanning rate-1080i -
SO a PS2 will look (at least noticably) better on the HD set than the old one, correct?
-
Will an HDTV set even produce a 480i picture? (I am aware that 480p (progressive right?) is a better image)
-
any 480i (interlaced signal) your TV recieves, it will automatically upconvert it to a 480p, so basically, no it will not produce a 480i picture, ever. however, while it will upconvert a 480i to 480p, it is not going to upconvert, let's say a 240 line VHS video input to a 480p, so basically, to find the answer for the PS2 looking better, you would have to research if it is a 480i signal that it is recieving from the PS2(i'm not positive what the PS2 video output is). if it a 480i, you will notice a difference(previously, you would have been watching 480i 3D Y/C at best with a non HD compatible TV), but if it is a lesser signal you will not...

does the wiring give a clue or no? Currently the PS2 is hooked up via component video.

doesn't definitely mean it's 480i, but i think that is what the PS2 puts out, don't know where you could confirm this though...
possibly try customer service on the PS webstie...
