BD Drive dies in my PS3 last night

Picture paused right in the middle of The Hobbit - guess the PS3 didn't approve of the movie.

Everything else other than the drive appears to work fine, but while the drive accepts a disc (audio, DVD, or BluRay), it does nothing with it. It doesn't even recognize that it has taken in a disc other than the blue disc light remains on. I've tried soft reboot. Hard reboot. Unplug and reboot. Quick format restore. I think its dead, JIm.

So, looks like I need to either buy a new PS3 (I have a few video games that I never play, some still wrapped) or go for a stand-alone BD player.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

Could get a standalone player now and a ps4 when they come out. PS3 will probably be a lot cheaper when the 4 is released.

Sony S790 is the way to go. Very good BD player with excellent PQ/SQ. 4k upscaling, apps, are some of the icing on the cake.

It certainly does open up all of the options!

I'm seeing PS3 for as low as $200 new at select Target stores (sold as a bundle with video games I'll end up giving to someone's kid), and stand-alone players that run the gambit in prices: as low as like $50 for a bottom-feeder, and as high as, well, as much as you would be willing to pay. I looked at Oppo - I thought they were a little less expensive than their list price...

I'm less willing to pay a premium for a BluRay player in comparison to other components in the HT, so I will probably settle on something between $100-$250.
