Optical Cable?

I just bought the Polk RM6000's and a Kenwood VR-507 Reciever and it sounds amazing but I have one question. Right now I am just using the analog audio out on my DVD player. It has an optical output as well. I am using Pro Logic II when I watch a DVD now and it sounds pretty awesome. Would it be worth my while to purchase an Optical audio cable and use that output? I'm not sure, but is that the only way I can get the Dolby Digital Effects my reciever has? I am not using the sub preout on my reciever and have the subwoofer turned off, as advised on this website and it makes a heck of a difference. I guess this setup will work OK with Dolby Digital as well. I appreciate all the help I've gotten so far as this is my first real home theater setup.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!!

    Hi:

To get the digital effect you have to have the coax or optical output from your dvd to your receiver connected. I would recommend coax. It is as good as optical and the wire is not as fragile.

Why don't you have your sub connected where it's supposed to be, the receiver's sub out? Why do you have it turned off?

Thanks for the advice. In my setup manual with my RM6000 it suggests using the speaker level inputs for the sub and to not use the sub pre-out. I have my front speakers set to large and the sub set to off on my reciever, that way all the bass goes to the sub and then through the corssover in the sub to the left and right speakers. I tried it using the sub pre-out on my reciever first and then used the speaker inputs and it sounds 100 times better. I dont have my sub turned off, I meant I have it turned to off on my reciever. believe me, the sub is working, and it kicks butt! I'll try the coax cable and see if I can tell a difference.
