New Polkie saying hello and asking for opinions
Hello fellow Polkies,
My name is Scott I have been a long time lurker and found lots of great information on your site. I finally registered yesterday and wanted to say thank you to everyone for your time and the valuable information you guys post here.
I do have a question for you all and will get to it soon. But a little back ground first. I start out in this hobby over a decade ago like a lot of people I would imagine by purchasing a HTIB. Over the years I have patently scrimped, saved, learned a ton and upgraded along the way. In April I purchased what I thought would be my final component an Emotiva XPA-5. Now I am not so sure.
My system is in my living room which opens to the kitchen and is 38ft long by 14ft wide with 9ft ceiling.
My listening preferences are 50% music 25% tv and 25% Movies.
I dont want to give anything away so I would ask for you to look over my system in my signature identify what you think would provide the best audio quality upgrade. Sorry to be cryptic but I feel I might just be suffering from upgradeidus.
Thanks for your time.

What do you feel you are missing ?
I would look at room treatments, properly tuning your sub and get a real BRP :-)Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)
Preamp: Joule Electra LA-150 MKII SE
Amp: Wright WPA 50-50 EAT KT88s
Analog: Marantz TT-15S1 MBS Glider SL| Wright WPP100C Amperex BB 6er5 and 7316 & WPM-100 SUT
Digital: Mac mini 2.3GHz dual-core i5 8g RAM 1.5 TB HDD Music Server Amarra (memory play) - USB - W4S DAC 2
Cables: Mits S3 IC and Spk cables| PS Audio PCs -
Really big room with really big speakers. If you want to go for broke, add a second sub, FXI A6 surrounds, RTI A1 for heights, and RTI A5's for front wides. You have a really good system, what are you not satisfied with? Unless we know what you're looking to improve, all we can do is suggest adding more gear, which isn't a good for your wallet.

Thanks for the speedy replies and kind words. I am very happy with the Denon AVR, AMP and speakers. For other input I am using a pretty high end HTPC with HDMI audio out.
Its the sub that i have doubts about. I am just not happy with it. I have been looking around and doing research for a while but subs are not my thing. I cant seem to narrow it down to a list. I would like some recommendations on a better sub. I would like to keep the budget in line with my current components. I could possibly add one now and another
later if needed.
My listening preferences for music is classic rock, and some light modern rock no rap or country.
Again thanks for your input.
Scott

Now there's a big part of your problem!TO ERR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE IS CANINE. -
Heard that these subs are ideal for music! 1000 as well but thought the 3000 would have more power for your large room for moives. http://www.ebay.com/itm/360586968890?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
Either the 1000 or 3000 is on my short list of subs to try out sometime this year hopefully.Full 5 channel set of Polk Audio

Hi, Welcome to Club Polk!
-
For a sub, I'ld look at SVS. If your looking for a more musical sub, their sealed versions would wouk well. If you were planning to run 2 of them, the SB-12 would probably be about right, if only 1, the SB-13. The ported subs are more for HT use. You may get away with 2 PB-12NSD's, but I would probably run 2 PB-12plus's with that room side. If only 1 for HT, the PB-13 would probably be adequate.
SVS has great customer service, and answer e-mails quickly. I think they even replied on a Saturday to one of mine.
Good luck. -

Welcome aboard! I say why not put up a second sub if possible. Also +1 to oppo since you really enjoy music. They make some serious gears. just my 0.02

38 x 14. Pretty big room you are trying to fill with bass. Dont just buy one sub, buy two. Big ones. Sealed ones. With 1,000 watt D-class amps.Do you hear that buzzing noise?

Thank you for all your replies. I am thinking two SVS SB-13 Ultra's should finish out my system.
Or do we ever stop upgrading in this hobby

No Country music? Well, I was gonna offer you a warm welcome to the forum but now I'm not so sure.
Just ribbin' ya' a bit. Everybody has their own listening preferences and you redeemed yourself with the comment about not listening to rap. Welcome to the forum, Scott. What is your budget for a sub and how loud would you say you normally listen?

Get one or two of these depending on your room and you will be happy

tight musical bass
My flabby LSi9s can't keep up, but maybe that isn't saying much -

Obsession? Rabbit hole? And my personal fav....."hobby" No my friend, there is no end, and welcome to Hotel California.....you may check out but you can never leave.
Your plan for two subs instead of one at a time is very smart, you stack up your body count quick and neat.

Be careful now, country bumpkins can offend some folks. They prefer "professional redneck". Just ask Lightman1.
