Noisy picture on TV

Hi,
I just bought a new widescreen CRT TV (Toshiba 34HFX83), and the picture is not really good. When I watch text scrolling across the screen, the text is not a solid block of color but composed of a lot of noisy speckles. This is very different from when I view it in the shop.
I don't have digital cable yet, so this is just conventional cable. I don't notice this with my 10 yr old GE TV.
I have tried swapping cable connection, even bypassing the receiver and VCR, connecting TV straight to wall socket. Wonder if anyone has experience this probelm or maybe just that there is some problem with the unit I have.
Oh yeah, this problem only exist if I switch the signal to widescreen mode. If I leave the display on 4:3 mode, the picture is really sharp. So I guess the connection is not the problem.
Thanks for any advice. I will be really pissed if this is the picture quality I am getting for widescreen with 2K CAD

Widescreen TV's are only beneficial for HD signals and DVD's. Standard cable will look like crap in widescreen mode. Do you have an HD channel you can access for comparison? -
Reg. cable does look grainy and soft on a bigger screen. I have a
35" regular TV and a 50" WS.
Run a wide screen DVD and if it does not look very good and I mean very..take it back. It will eat you away if you don't like the
WS mode. I returned a 57" WS toshiba in just 2 days and got a
hit-tot-chee ..huge diff from mfg. to mfg. on how they "upscale"
to WS mode.Front: LSI7
