Would the LSIM704 be a bad choice to pair with the 705s?

I was told by Polk that I should be fine matching the 704 with the 705s and 703s on the sides over the 706 to save some change.

Will I miss anything or regret not just grabbing the 706?

Oh man.. what a deal. Wife finally broke down and said whatever so I get to place my order on Monday!

Sucky part is that i'll have to run these off my Denon 3313CI till I pay off the speakers and make enough for a new amp or 2.

So in the end it will be like upgrading twice and hearing the speakers all over again for the first time once said and done.

    HAPPY HAPPY!

    Now about that 704?

My living room is a disaster at 33' long x 13' wide by 18' high cathedral ceilings. Not a closed room with an opening on on side to a hallway that's pretty big and a cut out on the same wall that's a pretty big opening to the kitchen.

I would probably get the 706 of the Polk E-bay site for $960. Good price, and a little better that the 704. At least you won't loose sleep thinking about another if in life.

I would still recommend the 706, unless you don't have the space or the funds.

Even with the center and fronts having the same 5 1/4" woofers it would make a difference?

I'm sure I can swing it just not sure if I can get as good as of a deal on the 706. Other then that I worry about my shelf supporting the extra weight of the 706 at 42.3lbs and the CSi40 I have on there now weighs 24lbs. The standard book shelf plank I have on there stated supporting 20lbs hehe. I guess i'll just figure that out if I go that route.

Scary having such a large speaker hanging over my 82" DLP on such an angle but its held up so far.

Yes, get the better 706 and be done with it. I hate buying the lesser and always second guessing my decision.

Maybe I should just go and grab the 707s while i'm at it since there better then the 705s. lol.. joking! Overkill for my space and so are the 705s but with kids I don't want to risk bookshelf speakers getting knocked over.. not that i'll let anyone close to these!

Bigger doesn't always mean better. IMO the 705's are a better balanced speaker musically than the 707's, but for a center channel I like the biggest available in that series.

It's about space, if your room is not large enough to accommodate for the sound it will be over powering and won't sound good.

Lets answer the question with a question.....why spend the money on a large speaker and play at low volume in a small room. Chosse the right speaker for the space

If the large speaker at low volume sounds better than the smaller speaker at higher volume...

    Which would you choose?

In a small/mid size room the smaller speaker.

My C1 II's are in a 11x12 room although I would like the C4's they would sound like crap in the room at any volume.

It's about imaging, reflections, bass response etc....it's not about noise.

Oh, well, yeah, neither the 707, nor the 705 - would sound good in a 11x12 bedroom-sized room...

I see what you are saying...

But I would hope that no one would be looking at these speakers with a room that small...?

11x12 room yes, with a bed and other furniture maybe. Will they always be in that room? It's your money, your space your room.

What I try to accomplish with music and sound in the hobby may differ than what your trying to accomplish.

    Yeah, I agree... I guess I never thought someone would even consider a 707 or 705 with a 11x12 bedroom-sized room...

I am talking about a 18x24+ foot room with 10 foot ceilings...

Amen to that....right tool for the right job.
    HDTVAV wrote: »

    lol

Typically larger speakers need good amounts of current to play well at lower volumes, which usually isn't their strong point. For an amp to put out more current, it needs more drive from the volume control hence why most larger speakers don't sound as good at lower volumes. Amps don't put out their rated power as soon as you turn it on. They only put out what is asked of them at a given volume up to their limits. That said, most amps can produce better current at lower volumes when compared to a receiver. So adding an amp will provide benefits even at lower volumes but the magic really starts to kick in at mid-higher volumes.

Too big a speaker in a smallish room won't sound as good as a smaller one all things being equal. Big speakers need room to breath, a farther back listening position to appreciate what they offer. Not every home/room is suited for that. So again, right tool for the right job.
