Need help. I ordered some 5jr's got them in from Florida. Pulled them out of box NICE--took grill off and lightly pushed in one of drivers. Froze up---other one scratchy bad---condition of everything is perfect. Dont dare hook up because something isnt right. The one is froze up tighter than a 2by4....its about 36 degrees here today-would that be a issue..i had planned on letting them warm up..but i was upset and put them back in original box and out in the garage they went...i have a 14 day return--- does that mean i pay shipping? Should i try to get ahold of seller? NEW TO EBAY alittle upset but maybe they never hooked them up,i have no idea....what would youall do ? Thanks in advance---- randy

Dude, of course get a hold of the seller and send the speakers back if they are not as advertised (i.e. frozen driver). If you have a multimeter, you can the speaker out of the box and measure resistance across terminals.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune on these, Randy. They look like a really nice pair of 5jr's. It sounds like you had the dreaded magnet shift on one or both of your mid woofers. If that's the case, they're pretty much shot. There's some CP members who've repaired shifted magnets, but to me it sounds like more hassle than it's worth. This can easily happen (when the speaker cabinets are jarred) with the vintage speakers and is the reason why most on this forum advise to use JB Weld (or another epoxy) around the driver magnets when doing other upgrades/mods. This could have easily happened while the speakers were in-transit from Florida, being tossed around by the shipper. It could have also been the case before the seller ever had the speakers - I see that the seller took them on consignment - so no way of really telling. The fact that it's 36 degrees there had nothing to do with this. In the ebay listing it said nothing of that they had been tested by the seller prior to their being listed, so I think it's definitely a reasonable assumption on your part that they should arrive in fully operational condition. You should first make sure that they are, in fact, not functioning properly, then contact the seller for a reasonable solution. I think they use MW6502 drivers (PLEASE VERIFY, of course!) which you can find used or check with Polk to see if they are still available as new replacements. They do still supply some of the old mid woofers - at a discount and with free shipping to CP members.

    Good luck.

it most likely happened in the shipping

ask the seller if he'll go in on the price of a new driver can't hurt to ask. At least you could send the driver back for inspection.

If I'm looking at the right ebay posting, the seller said, "We will only refund if the item is not as described in our listing. Item must be returned within 7 days, buyer pays shipping and handling."

Previously, they said, "These speakers are in excellent condition and are in like-new condition." Therefore, they should definitely reach you in fully operational condition.

If you are to simply return them, you'd be out the S/H charges from FL and back to FL. I'd try to work out some way to keep them while having them pay most or all of your cost to replace the trashed drivers. This, of course, assumes that you like the condition of the speakers otherwise.

I bought some from Michigan 2 weeks ago. They are perfect. Condition wasnt the best. But i repaired them to my satisfaction. Then i saw some ''in like new condition'' so i said why not. So i ordered some more--funny thing is it was on consignment like you just stated..so i am going to try to get in touch with seller first via email through ebay i guess. Thank you for all the feedback. I did NOT post pictures of these ones. I just got them off fed-ex truck this morning.... I also ordered some Monitor 7's i hope they dont end up like this.......am i stuck paying shipping? sad thing here is cabinets/grills are VERY NICE--but what good is a cabinet to your ears. Lol---thanks

IF Polk still carries the driver, it's usually $48 (+ tax) with free S/H for each driver for CP members.

If they don't carry the ones needed and it is the MW6502, there's a pair of them (from 1990) available on ebay right now (no affiliation) for $65 + $10:

In case it hasn't been explicitly stated already in this thread - the shifting magnets (due to failure of the old glue) is an endemic problem with those drivers after a few (!) decades. It's probably safe to assume that the manufacturer of the driver really didn't build 'em to have a three or more decade useful life.

They get very fragile - even to bumps and jostles when moving vintage Polks around one's home.

The prophylactic fix is to add a bead of epoxy to anchor the magnet.

When the magnet's already shifted, it is sometimes (and I am choosing my words carefully) not impossible to repair the driver. It's precision work, though:

I have a 2004 MW6502 that had a 3/4" tear in the rubber surround which I used some tissue paper and rubber cement to repair. It looks a tad funky in that spot (like it has a white spot on the surround) but the driver works perfectly.

If your 5jrs., indeed have, 6502s in them, you're welcome to it (I don't envision using it and it's been collecting dust), Randy! One of the mids in my Monitor 5s had this in it and it was the wrong driver impedance so I bought another from the gepster a while back.

The coldness up here wouldnt have anything to do with it. Would it ? It was 30-36 degrees here today. Maybe in the trucks it was sitting outside loaded all night----maybe ill bring them in and bring them to room temp tonight. Ive got garage heat off because its been fairly nice up here....nice here is 40 and above. Lol

Happy ending. Seller called me. We worked something out. I said half of what it would cost me to replace woofers@ 80.00 for 2 . They said they would credit my account back40.00 on phone and they gave me 50.00
i get to keep speakers. I have another set with good driver in them. Easy fix..they were very happy. And im happy because the boxes grills tweets are all in Vgood condition. They will be a good match up for the little Ycr620 receiver--then down road i can purchase new drivers for them :)
