Noobish question

Hello everyone, I am setting up my first HTS and I have a question that I hope someone here will be kind enough to answer.

I heard the Tsi400 at a friends place and was immediately sold by its performance and decided that I want it fro my HTS. The AVR I have chosen is the Denon 2113 with the output for the front L/R being,
95 W + 95 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, THD 0.08 %)
125 W + 125 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 0.7%)

But the recommended amplifier power for the Tsi400 is 20-200 watts per channel, so does that mean the amp is underpowered and the Tsi400 can take more??? Even the the most powerful a/v reveiver from denon being the 4520 can provide a max of,
150 W + 150 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, THD 0.05 %)
190 W + 190 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 0.7%)

For a moment I had thought of getting the tsi500(20-275 watt), but I'm unsure now as I don't know if the amp will be good enough for it.

I hope I am making sense here, please note that I am a noob :cheesygrin:

    The Denon you chose can drive the speakers but with more juice you can help them sing a little better.
    A lot depends on your budget.There is another thread floating around addressing a similar deal and many here really love the Pioneer elite to drive their stuff if you want to check it out.

    Welcome to Club Polk!

    Get a Denon that has all the bells and whistles that you want it to have and make sure it has preouts for adding a seperate amp later on. It will cost more but having those preouts to add a more powerful amp will give you more options for upgrading your power to ensure your speaker will operate to thier full potential, and also for upgrading to better speakers in the future.

    The first Denon that has preouts is the AVR-3313CI.

    Yup, that's why I bought that one a few weeks ago when I was going to settle on a lesser model. Now I wish I would of went up to the top at the 4520 just to have a full 11 channel pre outs and 9 channel speakers and a little more power but oh well.. that's life. Love the receiver though and damn does it sound great with my old 10 year old speaker setup! Its like I now have new speakers as the difference is night and day.

    Thanks guys, after going through your replies, I did a bit of research and found out that you are talking about bi-amping, where I direct the pre amp signal to a cross-over, in turn to 2 amps and then to the speakers. I can understand the obvious improvement that this arrangement will bring about. But, I am no audiophile and neither will I be updating my setup any time soon.

    So, I would rather spend a little more right now and be done with it. Initially I had thought of going for the Denon 2113 and the Tsi400. Could you tell me which of the following two options will generate better power/performance,

    A). Keep the Denon 2113 and upgrade speakers to Tsi 500

    OR

    B). Keep the Tsi 400 and upgrade to Denon 2313

    Based on what I have read so far, I think upgrading to the 2313 will be enough to get more out of the Tsi400. But I would rather listen to what you guys have to say, as my logic could be flawed. Also, I plan to purchase an SVS PB-1000 sub-woofer, this is partly why I feel the Tsi400 will be enough.

    No one is talking about bi-amping. What some are saying is to make sure the AVR you buy has pre outs, so that if you want/need down the road you can add an external power amp. The purpose of the external power amp is take over providing the power to the speakers from the AVR whether that is just the front left and right, the front 3, 5 or more speakers. The AVR will no longer provide power to the channels the power amp is driving.

    As brgman suggested, look into the Pioneer Elite SC series AVR's as they are a cut above and with your speakers, it would be more than enough to make you very happy without needing a power amp.

    One other thing, forget you ever heard of bi-amping. To do it properly is a challenge and costly.

    Thanks for your help. Pioneer Elite AVRs are not available in my place, however, they do have a series that is more powerful than their regular range. I have zeroed in on this one,

    Quick update, SC-LX56 is the Asian variant of the Elite SC-65, but one difference, the Asian variant is not THX certified, otherwise they have the very same specs....

    That is a great choice and think you will be very happy. Don't worry about the THX certification doesn't mean much in my book.

    Yes, it is.
    The SC-LX56 realizes true simultaneous multi-channel high power output, incorporating Direct Energy HD Class D amplification and THX Ultra2 Plus certification.

    Yes, it's better in it's ability to deliver the power, if that is what you are asking.
