Effects of Xover Modification.

Just thought I'd drop a line for those on the fence or even in the back of their head thinking about crossover mod. Let me preface by saying the 2.3 are stock to a point that the polys fail. Bone stock and in immaculate shape. I actually expected to see the original boxes based on their condition.
As some of you know (if you care hehe) I recently bought a set of 2.3. I have a set of 1c that are nearly modded out, less black hole and cabinet reinforcement they are as far as they can realistically go. After nearly a month of time with the 2.3, and all the poly cut outs I can handle, I decided to move the 1c back to the front. I wanted to hear them in comparison and the FIL that is visiting wanted to hear the difference in xover mod vs. none.
I can say with absolute certainty that my 1c out run the 2.3 when pushed hard. They are both spiked and run the same wires. This should be a clear testament to the enormous gains brought on by the xover modification, rings, gaskets, dynamat and other modifications so highly touted by the members of this forum. I give a bit of credit to the sub config as it seems to compliment the 1c better then the 2.3, possibly skewing the perception of gain, but plug and play the 1c kick start your heart and the 2.3 rely on the sub. Mids are off the chart with the 1c compared to the 2.3
Do not underestimate the value of a crossover modification. To any individual searching for quality and performance, without killing the pocketbook, I can assure you a solid set of vintage Polk, with updated xover and peripheral modifications listed, are the best bang for the buck.

Well on my 1C and the 2.3TLS the x-over modification has given me midrange in voices that I hear things I never heard before, the mod was well worth it.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

I concur!! :-D- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Anything holding you back on going for the mods in your 2.3? If the polyfill is reaching your PR in your 2.3, you will want to move it back up to the MR, getting it out of the way of the PR area.Statistics show that 98% of us will die at some point in our lifetime.
The other 2% will work for WalMart. -
Hey DSkip -
I assumed there may be a polyfill misconfiguration based on this statement -I give a bit of credit to the sub config as it seems to compliment the 1c better then the 2.3, possibly skewing the perception of gain, but plug and play the 1c kick start your heart and the 2.3 rely on the sub.
Maybe its just a misread on my part as the PR may be better tuned in the 1C based on what he is saying. But I hear what you mention about the Polyswitch.Statistics show that 98% of us will die at some point in our lifetime.
The other 2% will work for WalMart. -

Xover mods make these Polk SDA's into different speakers. No question. If anyone's on the fence about this just do it. Can't think of any other single mod that will improve the speaks to that degree."Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer

Yea I was at first thinking, this is dumb, I only paid $250 for the speakers.I am going to spend $400 on x-overs and boards and $200 on just tweeters. But it changed the speakers from middleing to awesome!drumminman wrote: »Xover mods make these Polk SDA's into different speakers. No question. If anyone's on the fence about this just do it. "Different" meaning Elevated. There is no a single reason to not nod your crossovers.Statistics show that 98% of us will die at some point in our lifetime.

Crossover mods were the second-most-important (second-most-positive) upgrade I did to my 1Bs. This actually beat replacing a dead tweeter.
I'll say it again: Upgrading the caps and resistors on the crossover boards made more overall improvement than replacing the non-functional secondary tweeter in the left channel. And to think that I used inexpensive Dayton and ERSE caps instead of the more-favored expensive brands.
The only thing that beat the crossover upgrade was connecting in a jumper wire between the negative binding posts of my amp; which fixed a semi-non-common ground problem (20 ohms resistance between channels) with my power amp. The 1B can't use an AI-1-style isolation transformer, and is therefore sensitive to using a non-common-ground amp.
