Which is a better receiver---- 620 or 820 i know one has 15 more watts. Extra dial and a couple of other odds n ends...i have a 620 mint -lights not working--last night i got a almost mint -lights not working..trying to decide if i should keep both or sell one---- im hoping someone will chime in to help make decission. I CANT TEST YET. With speakers that it will be hooked too. I did a small test on B&W's and it was hard to tell. It will be hooked to TT & ADVENT 201 tape player. So that will be vintage too me. Waiting for delivery so tomorrow they should be here. Hopefully..any thoughts on difference. I pm.d someone but there box was full....thanks in advance........to be hooked to 5jr temporary. Hopefully 7 or 10's later

mhardy. I figured what it was that was in the headphone slots..my 620 has open holes. The 820 i got has a plastic square plate that covers them.....when i saw your picture i wondered what those were. Now i know..

The 820 is "better" in terms of - power, features and tuner. The former two parameters are mostly for marketing :-) the latter is a potential real benefit. Buying used/vintage, though, condition and price (i.e., "value" of the purchase) will trump place in the food chain when new, IMO.
Yes, the Yamaha receivers came with these goofy "reserved for Yamaha orthodynamic headphones" tags for their headphone jacks. I can say that the vintage Yamaha headphones sounded good (I have a pair of the Mario Bellini-designed HP-2 headphones; time has not been kind to their construction materials, but they do still sound good). -

Im going to keep them both so it gives me something to play with. I will keep the 620 hooked to B&W's for now. USPS said probably tomorrow on the 5jr and ill use them with 820..then if i can score some 7 or 10's for a decent price ill jump on them. Then the bw's will go. Thank you for your feedback and pictures. Nice units and i like the clear sound from them. The 620 is the first Yammy ive actually liked the sounds of. So its been a vnice experience so far.....quick question..out of the 2 which would be in your opinion better for TT set up?..

I haven't head to head compared them; in general the Yamaha phono preamps of that era sounded (and still sound) pretty good to me.

Yamaha CR-1000: TOTL receiver from the previous model cycle to the CR-x20 receivers. Kind of a disco aesthetic sensibility :-) but actually a very good receiver; some favor it as the best Yamaha 2-channel receiver overall. It certainly has a fine tuner in it.

Yes. Ive been messing with this site trying to load pictures so i can post them and im not having much luck..cant drag pictures over for some reason. Wife is going to try later. I will check those out. I did start to read about how you touch the tuner button. And i found that very interesting..

Dont know if i mentioned it but last night i got a ADVENT 201 wood base cassette player. Its quite the rig----wife is going to post pictures. Hopefully soon..

The Advent deck was nice - Wollensak made the transport; one of the first consumer cassette decks with Dolby NR.
Heathkit (and Wollensak, too, if memory serves) sold a slightly different version with two VU meters. The Advent (single meter) deck was not 100% electronically identical to the two-meter decks - IIRC. -

And some very nice Yammies, Randy. I stopped with the CR-800, the predecessor to your CR-820 and quite a bit heavier at almost 31 lbs. That CR-1000 was the last stop back then!
I say you find some vintage ADS speakers (L-5X0-L-8X0s) and run that CR-820 on them. Those two make a wonderful vintage combo, with off the chart synergy!

Those are some nice speakers and other pictures..as a semi retired 18 wdriver i use to go to NH3 times a week into Vermont-up state NY and that is beautiful country. Thats quite the view there.use to take the shortcuts over the mountains in the summer when the roads were open. They closed the mountain off in winter to big rigs. Oh the good old days....i have plans on setting up photobucket soon..i have eye sight issues that limit me so it limits me to work with wife to asst.. Thanks again to both of you for feedback. As soon as i get new to me speakers and units set in place i will get better pictures. I am enjoying my Yamaha which i got a year ago,now another. Thank you again.....Randy..
