Speaker Placement

I am moving into a new home and trying to determine how to hardwire the family room. The best place for the TV is in a corner next to the fireplace. The room is a rectangle. Where are the best places for the rear channel speakers and the sub? I was thinking of putting the sub in the corner behind the TV. Is there a better place for the sub? A couch will be in the center of the room facing the fireplace. Should the rear speakers be on each wall slightly behind the couch?

Thanks for the help.

Regarding your sub, it's hard to say. You'll have to experiment with sub placement. Even moving it one foot can make a difference. Some corners are better than others. Just depends on your room layout, WAF, and aesthetics.

You're right about the rear speakers. If possible, try hanging them up 6 or 7 feet high and angling them down toward the listening position.

subwoofer placement: put the subwoofer on the place where you will do most of the listening, put on a bass heavy cd (preferebly something with notes, like a low playing piano or orchestra) then get on all fours and crawl around till you find the spot where the bass sounds the closest to the instrument playing. where that best spot is, is where the sub goes.

surround placement: it all depends, especially if you are facing a corner. you may just have to try out a few places. just a note, for home theater, move the speakers around the wall, just have them about 2 feet above your head. I find that in non-parrallel wall placement its just luck of the draw (or tedious work) to find the best spot.

In all honesty if your room is a rectangle the best sound I got was using this method:

But this makes your TV in the middle of the wall not in a corner.

    Just my thoughts
