I agree with the other posts about Bose. They are great at marketing... experts I would say in fact. But just go into any Circuit City or Best Buy and what do they have promitley displayed in front, Bose. And people stop and listen to it like it was the best thing since sliced bread. I just hold my hands over my ears every time I walk by the Bose display.. and I get weird looks. but hey, these ears belong to Polk.

I agree mostly on this topic. If you read the comments on www.circuitcity.com they are all positive. How could this be? Circuit City must remove the negative posts and only post what help business. What a crock!

    Down with Bose!

I stated that they had a lot of bass.. muddy undefined,,,bad mids and no highs.. it was posted and most have responded as that being heplful in their looking..however..as you stated..there are a few blinded + reviews there...wich make me laugh..cause i wonder if they listened to the same speakers I was?:D

Sound quality wise, what do you guys think of the marantz 6200 & 7200 compared to what you can get at the same price from Yamaha & Denon ?

    pres,
I like marantz, they are a very warm and musical reciever, they also have powerful amps, and good seperation on home theater, there have been a few prolbrems with the two models that you have mentioned, 6200, 7200.. a few lemons made it out of the factory and have been rearing their ugly heads at a home theater near you...
Now i'm not saying don't buy one, but if you are going to buy, buy from an authorized dealer, this way if you get a lemon you can either take it back or still have the warranty in tact, most companies like denon and marantz won't honor the warranty if you did not purchase it from an authorized dealer, just log on to the marantz web site to check a dealers status before purchasing the unit...

marantz still makes quality recievers some of the best, even after the phillips buy out and move to japan( from germany )

Much better than Yamaha at that price level, a little better than onkyo, and to be honest you would have to listen to both the marantz and denon and make that decision on your own... both are very comparable.... yammy has gown south the last couple of years, espically in the lower end, they have flooded the market with lower end filler, like sony and pioneer, you need a catalog to keep track of the model numbers, this leading to poor quality.

Hey thanks again. What kind of lemons are we talking about here ?
Man, my head is boiling with numbers here, i'm considering the

    Denon 3801 (Dolby NUM ??!?! WTH ?,1698 $),

Denon 3802 (all the goodies and power but 1898 $),

Marantz SR7200 No DTS matrix & Neo, do i really need this ?
Are there any DVD's using these formats yet ?
    great remote, 1500 $

Now, i have to check how much the SR8200 is..........

Another question, do the receiver that carry the DTS Neo & matrix formats also carry the normal DTS, Dolby surround formats & Dolby Pro Logic 1 ?

    Funny-

The origional post asked what appeared to be a simple question.
We got fishing stories, equipment lists, a top ten list, a rant, etc. etc.
You'd think a simple question would deserve a simple answer.
ce5288, I hope you found at least some of this helpful.

Well I don't have a fishing story, well one time i used 50ft of audio quest bi-wire and threw four lurs on it and caught 4 large mouth bass, while using my eq to measure the depth of the water below 1khz, man those bass sure run deep, almost went under 20khz before i could reel them in...

IF a reciever has dts neo, it has dts surround, dolby digital, and prologic, not necessarily prologic II. Neo and prologic II just enhance prologic, you won't find a dvd in prologic II or neo, It will just take a DVD or TV show done in stereo or prologic and give it a dolby digital feel, prologic II is 5.1, being LFT/RGHT are discreat and center/LFTSUR/RGHTSUR are matrix, with a lfe channel, where as dolby digital and DTS are 5.1 discreat! Do you really need prologic II, well it's not a big thing for me, wuold be nice but shure could live without it.... also check out the marantz 9200, the denon avr3802 is a nice reciever, you would have no regrets with that purchase... IF you wait a another month or so you could prolbry steal the marantz 14ex for around 1800, right now it's their flagship msrp runs $4800, I had a price a month ago for $2700, when the new flagship comes out you might be able to grab it for $1800, same with the denon 5800, or the 4800, once the ces show is over in a few days retailers will be looking to liquidate there inventories, and with the economy being the way it is you might be able to steal a real quality flagship. another flagship that might drop is the integra dtr9.1, or the 7.1, depending on what onkyo and integra do at hte ces show..

look at all your options, keep checking prices, and reading and asking questions, go and audition a few and try to make a decision and within the next month or so you might get something you thought unantainable.......

Wow, you have really helped me find a good receiver. I have compared marantz, denon, onkyo & Yamaha models that are in the same price range.

To get all the preouts that i need and all the listening modes in a Yamaha receiver costs a lot more money than the other brands and the sound quality isnt as good. (thats what i read)

Onkyo, well, they arent as powerfull as the other contenders and you get just as much for 500$ more. Quite frankly i end up paying for that damn THX crap which isnt anything else than a seal of approval. But the TXDS797 is a POWERHOUSE and loaded with features...i still dont know how much it costs. Cheap remote again

Denon,..... the 3802 looks mighty good but it is a bit more expensive and the remote doesnt look that good. I like to have perfect control of what im listening to. But it is a full package.

Now, so far i like the marrantz 7200. It is not as expensive, it has 192kHz/24-bit D/A Converters (for front L & R channels). Show me some big bills to get that in other receivers. I read nothing but great things about the circle surround mode (although the Dolby Pro Logic II doesnt play as loud) and the direct imput that the 7200 offers. Great remote. BUT, it doesnt have all the latest listening modes.......... And im sure if my hi fi dealer is a authorized dealer yet, i read about the clicking and popping problems and i want a safe warranty. But why is the marrantz cheaper ?? The remote is by itself 200$ and the marantz is just as powerfull and maybe a little more than the others. I want something that sounds GOOD

I know that i might be a pain in the bottoms but i have other questions .
What exactly do discrete channels do or mean ?
What the hell do these DTS ES, Neo, matrix and blablabla do ? Do they sound much better ?
And why would i want to plug my Progressive scan DVD and my HDTV on my receiver ?!?!? Wont the quality of the image decrease and what benefits would i gain by doing so ?

Oh damn, so many questions.......... you dont have to answer them, ill understand

discrete vs. matrixed channels - a discrete channel is it's own signal, a good example is the rear's in a DD set-up, each speaker recieves a different discrete signal. a matrixed channel (usaully a center rear) is a channel that takes both the rear signals and blends them together, not a true channel sent from the soundtrack direct to the speaker, but a channel mergered from other channels to create a channel (i hope that makes sense) a discrete center rear would play it's own seperate signal, different than either side rear. this can be accomplishes with DTE ES, THX-EX, etc. encoding soundtacks.

DTS-ES = 6.1 channel movie soundtrack, as opposed to DTS (5.1)
Neo takes a prologic soudtrack and sends the all 5 speakers (i think), similar to DPII. don't wuote me on the Neo...

progressive scan DVD to HDTV - benefits, only one connection, best possible signal intergrity. benefits of running to reciever then HDTV, on screen dispaly, ease of input selection on your monitor, with 2 seperate runs of cables and 2 connections, you do increase your chance for signal degredation...

At this current time there are a lot of recievers offering component video switching.. For example my denon offers complete component video switching, but no on-screen menu thru the component video outputs, currently there is no reciever that does this!! so the benifits of a on screen thru a reciever via: component is not there, but if you have more than one source for component video, dvd,tv, and sat and your tv only has one imput, thats where the benifit comes in.. personally if I had only one component I would run it direct to the tv, to me the less connections I have to make the better, always use the direct route if possible, this allows shorter runs of cable and cuts down on the components that have no real effect on the signal and are just passing it, alowing for optimum sound and picture..

I couldnt thank you guys enough for all the help that you gave me. I just feel a bit lost now that i have to shop for a new receiver. Things have changed in the last couple of years. 3-4 years ago we could only talk about DTS, DD, DPL, AC-3 but now we have these neo, matrix, ES, 6.1, 7.1, DPL2, SACD, DVDA that we have to consider. Let's just say that i was a little bit lost.

    So thanks again

THE DENON AVR 1802 AT $325 IS A KILLER DEAL. IM SO GLAD TO BE DONE WITH MY 4 YR OLD ONKYO.NO MORE NOISY FAN.ALMOST NILL SUB OUTPUT IN CD MODE. INABILITY TO SET VOLUME AS IT MOVED TO MUCH EITHER WAY SO WAS ALWAYS TO LOUD OR TO QUIT AT NIGHT. THE DENON VOLUME STEPS WITH MUCH SMALLER ADJUSTMENTS PER MOVEMENT. PLUS I PICKED UP NEW FEATURES, PRO LOGIC 2,GREAT FOR TV,5 CHANNEL STEREO, AND ABILITY TO PLAY SPEAKERS A AND B AT SAME TIME.LOOK ON EBAY FOR A DEAL.
