is this sponge as good as acoustic sponge?
I stuffed a couple pillows behind the main speakers an heard a slite improvement attached image.
I would like to have a few acoutic panels directly behind the main LRC speakers then the first reflection points on side walls my right front main speaker is a tad close to the right wall approsmently 10" I would like sponge on this side wall to prevent reflections.
I plan a QRD type diffuser on the back wall surrounded w/ the same sponge.

I would prefer to use sponge instead of stuff like fiberglass or Roxul rockwool (don't want to be itching and breating fiberglass). plus the exposed sponge looks kindof cool.
I'm kindof leaning toward this walmart sponge because it's white (unlike 99% of actualle acoutisc sponge) it's inexpensive and it's thick.
any tips is appreciated.

Steve, no offense, but until you get that clusterf$%^ straightened out, noting is going to help your sound. If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money. -

PLEASE stop calling it a sponge... Use acoustic panel, foam, defuser, etc.
Adjusting the placement of your speakers will be the first improvement in your system; free placed speaker stands would be an improvement. Make sure they are the same height, and equal distance from the TV; also make sure your listening position is centered between the speakers. Based on your pictures, even if you adjust the placement of your speakers, you will have a lot of reflections off of the TV sides, and the shelves and side wall on the right side.
If after that you are still wanting to do acoustic treatments, what are you trying to accomplish with them? Acoustic panels/foam on behind the speakers probably won't make much of a difference because your speakers are not bi-polar and reflecting off the rear wall. You will have reflections of the side wall to the right, so that could be addressed.
What are you trying to accomplish with the bass traps? -
Not to high jack but I have a quick question on the subject of pillows .
On the right side of my listening room is a large sectional couch with plenty of pillows. On the far left side is the wall and a window. I'm on the top floor so I don't have anything on the window. My question is do couches, pillows, etc. negatively impact the listening space if these objects are not symmetrical to the room? The reason I ask is I've noticed many of these room treatments seem to have some sort of symmetry when placed on the walls of a room.

I've been so busy I haven't been back on the forum until now, but my first post read was this one. Awesome! I applaud fully your wanting to treat the room acoustics, but certainly you can tweak the system as it is by simply better placements. I love the picture by the way, serious attempts at a good resolution! Whatever works in the interim!

Great, makes sense. Thanks! That's because there are specific areas you want to treat and speakers are more often than not placed symmetrically in the room. If they weren't symmetrical, you wouldn't want your treatments symmetrical either. Done right, the only thing you're addressing is major reflection points and bass reinforcing areas (corners and such).
People like symmetry and patterns, hence the results you see.

actualley the left speaker protrudes a 1" in front of the TV. I'm in the process of making a new shelf for the right side and elimimate or shorten the shelf directly above.
If after that you are still wanting to do acoustic treatments, what are you trying to accomplish with them? the pillows do make it sound better more detailed.

yes the right speaker is a tad close to the wall I taped a piece of 1" packing foam and it made a nice suttle improvement.

note the angle of the image it was taken from the listening and viewing position (which is'nt centered inbetween both speakers) I know this is'nt ideal so I've angled eack speaker to the left.
each main speaker is 12.5' from my head. the right is 13'.

Guy's I'm in the process of adjusting the speakers positions allready adjusted thee center.
will post images of main relocations this week. I still plan the acoutic treatment so I ask is this sponge just as good as the expensive
acoutisc sponge? the last review from Wallmart writes he used it for treatments and it worked good.
