I've taken delivery of this package and I'm afraid what's inside might be damaged . . . a SS pre-amp
The packaging peanuts appear melted, but the exterior box does not appear over-heated or out of the ordinary . . . fyi, it about 30 minute to peel the cardboard off the peanuts. I have left the package as you see it. I not sure how to proceed from here, for fear of damaging the Pre . . .

Your thoughts?

TY,

G

Chances are that is an expanding foam packing. The shipper should have put the pre in a plastic bag or liner first. If so It will break in about a half dozen pieces revealing the gem inside. If not its glued to the component like its glued to the box. Be interesting to see if they bagged it first. More pics please.
    Too much **** to list....

Not sure if this is the stuff but there is a foam packing that gets blown in like insulation foam and then forms and drys.
I would do just what you are doing and take pics of each step to open this but you may just find the pre in plastic shelled in this packing.

Glenn, as i told you in our pm exchange, those are not melted peanuts, it is spray insulation foam, that is what i always used to surround and protect the contents.

the green is some of the bubble wrap that the unit and remote are wrapped in as well as being in ziploc bags and the pre is in a large garbage bag.

Several members who have bought gear from me have sent me joking emails about feeling like they have given birth or sending photos to nasa showing how to wrap items.

Thankfully no one has had to report back of damaged items since i started using this method that stuwee informed me of.

I would just start pulling the insulation away, and seeing as its bubble wrapped and wrapped in a plastic bag, it should not be all that hard getting it out.

I did insure the contents for 700 dollars, and i dont see how any shipper could say there was not at least reasonable care in the packing.

My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

    Hmmm...

Interesting - my only concern is reusing a box after this would be impossible.. I love the idea - I think if I were to use it - I would line the box with plastic so you could open the box and "remove" the "great stuff"

    Hmmm... very interesting idea!

Yeah, the box is shot for sure, im sure doing the whole procedure inside a large garbage bag would solve that, but it would have to be a pretty fine box for me to care about reuse.

Yes, Trey, knowing you, you would certainly line the box to avoid such a mess!

Curious how many cans does it take to do a box like this and what is the cost of these cans? Also how thick is the layer/s usually?

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

That was 4 cans of the large gap and crack sealant.

they are about 5 bucks a piece, the end thickness depends, of course, on how much room you leave between what is being packed and the box.

For someone who is shipping a lot of packages, there are apparatuses that use much larger containers and can be reused, looks something like a backpack garden sprayer.

This is all interesting... at $5.00 a can that may not make economical sense for me unfortunately...

    FWIW - you can purchase .5" thick, 4'x8' foam at Lowes/HD for $13.00, 1" for $15.00 and 2" for $25.00

One sheet would pack 4-6 of those preamps and short of a nuclear bomb nothing will get to them... just put a layer of bubble wrap between the pre and "build" inserts for the sides...
