Who received them this year. I didn't get one as usual but often wonder if I should have with everything going on. My biggest concern is just trying to keep the kids from getting it. My body seems to have a great immune system to the flu. This is probaly a dum thing to talk about but its Friday and I'm ready to go home and not only that the flu seems to be the only thing on the news right know.

Both the wife and I had it done about a month ago. We do it every year.

I really don't have a choice in the matter, I had cancer when I was 9, and part of the many procedures I went through was the removal of my spleen. My immune system is in check, but Doc wants me to play it safe, so I do.

Thing that gets me, is why do we 'run out' of the vac every year?

    Cheers,
    Russ

As I understand it, there are only 2 manufactures of the vaccine in the US and they only produce a limited number depending on the previous years needs. The flu hit extremely early this year, usually it doesn't hit until early January. This year it started in November (or earlier). So, the normal backstock is gone and the worst hasn't hit yet. Also add that the news is blowing this way up and everyone is panicking so there are more then the average # of people getting the shot. I read in the paper the other day that on average 35,000 die of flu related symptoms a year. That's quite a lot, I had no idea.

I for one never get the shot nor does my wife or daughter. I've had several friends who got the shot and were out for a week with the flu.

    Peace Out~:D

I am 23 and I got one this year. My job was giving them out free so I said what the hell. I usually don't them, but seeing as how I was technically being PAID to get it I decided to. That and my father wouldn't leave me alone about it. He called me every day to tell me how many kids had died. I guess he doesn't understand that I am not a kid anymore.

I had my first and only flu shot about 15 years ago. I got sick as a dog a couple weeks later.

I've never had one since and the flu has been a distant memory.

You may not need one depending on your AGE. Your kids may get the flu but plenty of rest and proper nutrition will keep everyone healthy in the long run. Why all of a sudden the big concern. The negative news perhaps. Nothing new from 15 years ago. Hang in there.

I think that even in this day and age, there should be some concern relating to a flu epidemic. My grandmother lived through the one in the 20s, but she lost both her parents. Whats to keep that sort of thing from happening again? I think that that's an underlying concern that most people have.

I think that the right thing to do at this point is only get the vaccination if you are a high risk patient. Since it is in short supply, I think they should be held out for only those that truly need them, not those that don't want to get sick. Save it for those that would be of risk of dying, or severely complicating their other comorbid disease state.

    Agreed shizelbs.

Nadams, I was thinking more along the lines that if one does get the flu and they are in relatively good health, you can and will survive. You're right, one should be thinking along the lines of prevention therefore preventing an epidemic.

I got one. They tested out the new needleless biojectors on use to shoot em into us guinea pigs at work. Better then needle :)
I got the shot yearly because I always got the flu every year and it sucked. Now I just get sick for a few days.

I never get on and probably never will. the shot you get is the dead last years strain of the bug. Hmmmm how does this stop this years new strain? It must work somehow but I dont want the shot.
I hardly ever get sick aswell I figure the more the body has to fight itself the stronger it gets. Dont need to be dependent on drugs to fix everything.

The job offers free shots every year...I guess to them it seems cheaper to pony up the money for each employee to get the shots rather than have us call in sick for 3-4 days....

I tell you one thing, reading the disclaimer about what the negative effects of the flu shot can really scare the crap out of ya...
