though i can't help you specifically, component systems are generally considered better than coaxes. never heard any of what you asked about, so i can't say ne thing else; have fun.

i'm not too big on jbl myself and I love the sound of the db's... if i were you i'd find a place where i could listen to the jbl's and see what you think. personally i think a component set in anything other than a 6.5" or 5.25" woofer just feels off... I could be wrong though a 5x7 component set could sound great, i'd just rather to the custom mods and put in a 6.5" comp set. Also one thing to keep in mind is that there's more to install and more parts that can break with a component set. It all depends on which you like better and which one you'd rather deal with :D

Components are better than coaxials for a cople reasons.

    1. Flexibility with imagine. Duh! You have 2 extra speakers so you can spread out the sound stage more!

    2. Sound quality. The tweeter mounted in front of the woofer can deflect or block some of the soundwaves from the woofer and that may cause a slight coloration of the sound. Nothing major tho in my opinion.

    3. Crossocvers are usually better on comps. Coaxials tend to use tiny little capacitors or other worthless things on them whereas comps use higher quality stuff. However, Momo coaxs have seperate crossovers just like comps and if Im not mistaken, so does DB coaxs.

Other than that, there really isnt anything wrong with coaxials, provided they are a good quality set.

If you take a look at the JBL comps that he was looking at and compare specs etc i'd say the DB's woudn't have much trouble outperforming them...

I have a 1993 Ford Escort Hatchback and I've got a pair of DB 5x7's in the rear shelves so I've got a good idea of what you're going through. Here are a few insights I've got for you:

    - Don't even bother putting in the Polk DB 5x7 if you don't have an amp. I tried running them off of my Pioneer HU (50Wx4 Max. at 23 RMS) and it sounded god awful. Plus I was probably damaging the speakers. Go out and buy yourself an amp that matches up well with the speaker (at least 50W RMS). If you want to stay cheap I find that the lower end Pioneer and Alpine stuff is acceptable.

    - Soundproof your doors!! All that plastic rattles like hell when you put a decent mid-bass driver in the doors. I only have $20 Pioneers with a paper woofer and tweeter in my doors and the car used to make a shitload of noise before I soundproofed it. Get yourself some dynamat. Or if you're cheap like me I've got a good home depot style trick you can use.

    - The pole that the tweeter is mounted on top of on the DB 5x7's is very long. It provides for some very good imaging but is a **** when you're trying to mount the speakers on those plates/grills that the Escort has. Make sure you use the screws and little extention pices that Polk provides in the package or you'll never get the speaker mounted. Also make sure you screw the speaker as close as you possibly can to the grill or when you start to give the speakers a really good go they'll bottom out.

Even with all the crap you'll have to do with the 5x7's to get them in your car I think you'll really enjoy them. The bass is tight and heavy. And the highs aren't that bad either ;) If you've got any more questions feel free to ask.

Oh, and the DB series coaxials don't come with crossovers.

actually, they do come with crossovers, all coaxial speakers have to come with some type of crossover, even if it is a crappy little capactior or something
but theyre mounted on the speaker itself
