Does anyone know anything about these speakers. I picked up a pair today with a pair of cerwin Vega DX-9 for $15. All I wanted was the Mitsubishi's but the guy made me take the CV's too, to be able to get the Mitsubishi's. I am not familiar with them But they appear to be pretty nice for the time period; maybe mid-late 70's. Extremely heavy all drivers in excellent shape. I have found a few pics online but mine do not look exactly like those. I believe the mids have been changed in these but retrofit extremely well aesthetically. These also have all black tweets and tweet trim. The pics online show to have silver/ aluminum trim on all drivers. not the normal cheesy trim found on most. More like the Pioneer HPM stuff.

As said; very heavy cabinet. Slot port. Woofer with a coated fabric surround, real wood rosewood veneer.

Haven't had time to hook them up yet. i did pull a tweet and mid as they didin't match the pictures of the originals such as the pic you placed above. The tweets have been replaced with Morel MD-28's and the mids with Saire 12-VR (made in france). I find nothing on the mids but they appear preety decent; very heavy magnet, rubber surround, overall good construction appearance. The tweets seem to be pretty well regarded. Woofers are original and also in pretty good shape. Cabinets are about a 6-7 out of 10 and extrememly heavy for their size. I hoped Mhardey may know something about them. He seems to be very familiar with a lot of the older gear. maybe he will chime in later.

they are frankenspeakers. might not sound too bad but what the original sound is like can't be determined. i guess if they sound good keep em...if not sell them.

Pretty much; my expectations for them even in original conditon would be rather... managed.
The big Japanese conglomerates tended to wildly misunderstand (IMO) American tastes in loudspeakers... or maybe they understood it too well! :-( At any rate, they seemed to think we all wanted something akin to the JBL "Century" (L-100) sound. Many of us... actually didn't want that.



That said, for the ex-US market, even some of the huge-mongous Japanese companies made some amazing loudspeaker products; they just didn't share them here. Indeed, Mitsubishi's Diatone brand featured some astonishingly good drivers, even in the not-too-distant past.

Thanks for the response MHardy. You always seem to have a tremendous knowledge of a lot of the vintage gear that was not always the norm.

Since pulling the drivers i have come to terms with them being frankens. had hoped to get an idea of what they should have sounded like because they look so well built. Not sure what I'll do with them yet. maybe part out the woofers to someone in need of original replacement parts. The tweets are pretty nice. maybe I can use them in some other project. I still have found zilch on the mids but they look pretty decent. Not sure what to do with them.

I'm not really into the Cerwin Vega sound, and I don't party much anymore. Will probably clean and refoam them and then turn them on CL or the like. Either way not a bad deal for $15. Something to play with for a few days anyway.
