Dont know if it is the best or not depends on what you like in the picture. It is at the top of my list of new TV's to purchase. Considering a Front projection as well. Just started to look into the front projector though.

I do not care about size but I do not have the room for a front projection. I want crystal clear PQ for movies. I am considering the Samsung 61" Widescreen DLP HDTV Monitor.

Samsung was first to market on these, and kudos for that, but I think there is still a lot a growing room for PQ. DLP viewing angles kind of well, suck. The coolest thing about the DLP, is that you can pick the TV up over your head.

In the LCD realm I think the Sony XBR 60" LCD is really good (It's the only Sony product I would buy). However, the Hitachi S series (non-LCD) have the best picture quality. Hitachi also has an X series which is their flagship, but they don't seem to be carried in big chain stores, at least not around here.

Keep your eye out for TV's coming out with LCOS chips in them. These are the chips used in all the high end external front projection systems. They will have three of them in the tv's like the three LCD's in the Sony tv's.

actuley the samsung dlp 61 is very hard to find in stock it is very hot. and yes it has the best pq of all and none of the drawbacks of the others. but it is not 4 in thick.the dlp is beter than the plasma and still sas the ability to improve alot. the samsung has the mustang 2 chipset in it and the new + chipset just hit sema last spring. also they can do a 3 pannel dlp like the lcd but that is costing a mint right now.

Yeah I don’t understand that one. Why does it not cost that much for three LCD chips, but it cost so much for three DLP chips? I know they work on different technology, but why such a big difference in price?

the cost of the DLP chips will be considerably higher because it is MUCH more complicated to make.

the LCD chips are just standard semiconductor chips, while the DLP chips are MEMS devices (micro-electromechanical systems), which is still a young technology and more expensive to produce.

the chips for LCD panels are less complicated to produce than state of the art microprocessors, and can leverage the advances in fabrication made from microprocessors. flash memory, embedded chips, etc, and LCD chip can be produced on technology that is a few years old and has been mastered and made cheap.

on each DLP chip, which is probably smaller than the size of a quarter, there are thousands of micro-mirrors which actually move to redirect light. this is much more complicated to fabricate than standard semiconductor chips with no moving parts. this more complicated processing causes yields to be much lower, which increases the cost per die (chip).

I went to CC today and looked at the Samsung line of DLP's and the Sony XBR 60". For the price, the XBR seems to be a better deal. But, If you have to replace the bulb on the Samsung every couple of years at $200-$400 a pop...I dont know. The PQ is very comparable. The 60" XBR was going for about $4,000 and the samsung 61 for about $5,000. I also looked at the Hitachi Ultravision, it goes for about $3,500. It looks good except from the side. Any opinions?

I went to CC today and looked at the Samsung line of DLP's and the Sony Grand WEGA XBR 60". For the price, the XBR seems to be a better deal. Especially, If you have to replace the bulb on the Samsung every couple of years at $200-$400 a pop...I dont know. How often would the Grand WEGA need repair or replacing? The PQ is very comparable. I prefer the Hitachi to the Grand Wega hands down, but I prefer the Samsung DLP's to any LCD or plasma. Stuck pixels drive me crazy! They say the next generation of DLPs will be even better, as they've figured out a way to improve the contrast ratio.

Since you've got room, go with the Hitachi S series or higher, and take all that money you saved and order an SVS Subwoofer. As for viewing angle, Hitachi has the best for traditional rptv. and besides, who is gonna sit way off to the side of any tv and try to watch it? ;)

RP CRT is still the way to go, unless you have the BIG bucks.

You can get a 47" 1080i capable RP-CRT HDTV for less than $1500 now.

Plasmas are great but expensive and still only do 720p. Unless maybe you drop $20,000 for the 61" - I wouldn't know...

RP LCD - too expensive for what you get. Twice the price of the same sized RP CRT's and the picture isn't that much better, or any better at all, that I could tell.

Direct-view LCD - small, overpriced, horrible view angles, blurry motion artifacts (too slow refesh).. need I say more?

RP DLP - overpriced, picture isn't that much better than CRT or LCD, plus it makes me seasick to look at it. I guess I'm one of the "sensitive" ones. Maybe once they work out the issues. But by then they will be doing 1080i capable plasmas (1800x1024) so it will be moot. IMO DLP is dead in the water.

What about the Sony XBY Grand WEGA? I was looking at the 60" for about 5,000. It is a rear projection LCD.

Samsungs latest bulbs run around $198 from samsungparts.com. I just bought a Sammy 50" DLP (HL-S5086W), here's what I've found:

    Pro:
DVD's are spectacular, literally (after calibration with DVE)
Light weight, my 50" is 62lbs
Fairly narrow in depth, about 14"
I'm able to make standard def TV look really good with some tinkering
    Excellent contrast/color
    Screen has virtually no reflection
    Tons of inputs

    Cons:
You won't get BLACK blacks, but close
    TV speakers/audio is pitiful/extremely generic

Mine was $1344.00 from Sears. My cable company doesn't have Hi-Def yet down here, so I can't comment---but if it looks anything like the DVD playback, I'll be doing back-flips. FWIW, if plasmas weren't so expensive, I probably would have went that route--but the cost difference doesn't justify for me.

Another plus is that rear projection is the most energy efficient of the large screen format TV's.

PLus no burn in issues with LCD or DLP, although plasma still reportedly delivers the best PQ. Go DLP and forget about, Panny or Sammy and some Mitsubishi models are the preferred.

Samsung's is already out but only in 56". Has already been review by Sound and Vision, (I Think) about 2 months ago... Pretty decent ratings. Still think Plasmas are best, but I work with mostly Fujitsus and Runco's. We are authorized dealers for all kinds of brands, but you see them in the shop everywhere around us, so we go for the names you typically don't see. The new Runco 50" is a 720p panel, with 1080 colour processor. We've had folks come through our store thinking '1080p' and saying it looked just as good if not better than Pioneer's 1080p plasma. Then I tell them the price tag, and they get turned off. It's actually next to a Toshiba 1080p 47" cinema regza, and it makes it look bad, but in all honesty the Toshia on it's own looks decent. Just qc issues. (and the HDDVD player hooked up directly to it doesn't hurt either.

Whoever mentioned Hitachi Director series (HDX) is right on the ball. In standard consumer lines I think it's prob the better plasma sub $5000. Just hard to find.... I think DLP are ok, haven't seen the LED unit. I don't like how the standard units make a picture but pretty promising. Aim high, save pennies, get a 'better brand'.

    My chump change.

Just be careful and don't hurt yourself because you will be doing back-flips when you get HD, it looks that good. Nothing available for you ota?
