Matching Polk PSW 10sub
I recently got into vinyl listening. I had a pair of KLH model 16 2-way speakers laying around and a Superscope PAC 770 amplifier that I used to use solely for guitar study but haven't used for years. Over Christmas I got the AudioTechnica LP60 turntable and hooked all those units up together. I have to admit records sounded awesome!
Last week I got a Polk PSW 10 subwoofer and of course it improved the listening experience a zillion percent!
Sometimes however I'd like to hear
a little more "richness" from the mid ranges and highs and was wondering
if anyone could weigh in on the subject.
My satellites are 100w a 6 1/2 inch
speakers and a 1 inch tweeter.
My amplifier has 3 simple bass, mid and treble knobs.
I have my PSW10 set with Low Pass all the way to the right, volume fairly high above 12:00, and the phase switch set in the up position.
The triad of speakers and woofer are
in front, on the longer side of a 16 1/2 x 16 inch room with the speakers appx ear level and toed in and appx 14 ft apart and a foot from the front wall. The sub is set appx 10 ft from the left speaker and about 4 feet from the right and actually peaking out from under a long desk and on a 1-inch high guitar amplifier sound absorption platform (to not annoy my neighbors).
I tried the sub in a couple of places and liked it in all if them but chose this spot for it out of convenience. Thought it made the mids sound fuller as well.
The music I listen is mostly Indie rock and folk: Pixies, Grizzly Bear, Wilco,
et al.

Sell the PSW10 and start over. Any sub you buy is not going to help with an improvement in "richness" in the mids and highs. The PSW10 is not a good sub and I stand by my opinion that Polk should quit putting their hard earned brand name on it.
As far as wanting a rich sound out of a PA amp? Good luck. Those KLHs are quite capable of reproducing a nice sound, but not with that amp, and the sub isn't doing you any favors.
What are you using as a preamp for the TT? There could be an issue there as well. -
I am using the amps preamp. But the TT also allows
me to choose between its own preamp and the one in the amp.
I haven't tried switching to the TT amp yet.
Ill also consider getting a different amp more suited
for the TT when $$ allows -

Ok, so the Superscope has a passive pre and the TT has a built in amp? Just a little confused as to the config. Doesn't really matter. If you cant get the sound you are looking for from the trifecta, then maybe it is time to start plugging in different pieces.
Don't want to come off as snotty, but the PSW10 is a terrible sub. I have a number of friends who have had issues with it, and hear a couple of times a month on the forum about problems.
Polk does make some nice subs, but the PSW10 is not one of them. IMO, if you are looking for a more full natural sound, then maybe a nice integrated amp would be in order (NAD, Marantz, Cambridge, etc.) There are less expensive, decent older integrates out there such as Technics, Kenwood, Pioneer, that would serve well too. -

I'm still amazed at hearing the sound diff between
vinyl and digital. I tried switching to the TT preamp
but it doesn't seem to work with the Superscope.
Maybe because I have it going into the aux with the
sub going into the SS's preamp. So now I agree that
a true TT amp is in order. Sidebar is that I bought the
SS and KLHs back in 2000 and haven't used them in years.
So far all of this has only cost me an added $80 since I got the
TT for free and bought the PSW10 used on Amazon
for $80+tax but I will def start scoping out
TT amps. The research is part of the fun! -
