Anybody ship anything USPS lately? I shipped a 6"x5"x4" 1lb box today from west coast to Kentucky. This would have cost $6.50 Priority Mail and around the same Parcel Post before. Now Priority was $12 something and Parcel Post was $9.79. I said "you've got to be kidding me, the rates went up that much?", she said "well they went up a little bit". Well the flat rate boxes went up just a bit but everything else it's basically too expensive to ship a smaller value item now.

I sell used/rare books as a part-time side business and, if you think that domestic shipping rates have increased a lot, you should check out the new increased U.S. Postal international shipping rates. I used to average 4 or 5 overseas book orders a month to places like Japan, Australia, England, France, etc. A Global Priorty Mail flat rate envelope that used to cost $14 now costs $24. And a priority mail medium flat rate box that used to cost $45 to ship overseas is now $60. It has killed my overseas business! And, domestically, it costs me about $5 on average to ship a single average-sized hardcover. And that is not even including postal insurance and all the other fees! I shipped a book out today and postal insurance alone was over $7!

I used to sell a bunch of stuff on Ebay. I would also buy stuff, usually electronics or guitars and related accessories, to try them out and then resell them if I didn't want them. You take enough of a hit with Ebay/PayPal fees but with the way the shipping costs are now it's unaffordable. I gave up on UPS/FedEx a long time ago except for larger items but now USPS is just as expensive. Unfortunately I live in a fairly remote area so local selling of the type of stuff I sell is not really an option. Basically, if it doesn't fit in an envelope or the little $5.80 flat rate box you're screwed.

Funny, FedEx hasn't gotten any more expensive for me over the last few years...

It's sad USPS used to be the only self supportive Gov't entity. That started to decline rapidly when fax/email came aboard...times have changed

It doesn't help that they have the WORST custom service of any business. I intentionally choose not to put money into the Post Office if I don't have to, but I can't stand trying to do business with the employees.

I don't know. For 43 cents I can profess my love for Keiko on a piece of paper, stick it in an envelope and have it hand delivered to the dear boy halfway around the world. 43 cents. I just can't be there to see his beaming face when he gets it.

I've been shipping packages with the PO for awhile now. Maybe a couple thousand packages? Every single one has been accounted for. Not a single lost package.

    The PO gets my vote.

Thanks, goofyGAguy. Yes, I was referring to media mail as I ship all of my books strictly by media mail unless the buyer requests (and pays for) prioriy mail. Media mail prices have really increased too. A single hardcover book costs about $4 or $5 to ship by media mail and that is not including insurance or any extras. Shipping a single CD costs about $2.50 by media mail nowadays.
