some one may have asked this b4 but i was just sitting around going thru the new dvd releases and saw a 6.1 dts es sndtrk.

my ???'s
1. can you listen to this sndtrk if you dont have the 6th channel?
2. do you think maybe some thing would be missing(sound wise)? maybe from the rear channels

'i like the dts sndtrks and they sound great on my ht.. my wife would beat me if i have to go out and buy a new rcvr and more speakers.
anybody running this format or even 7.1? would it be worth the beatings?

6.1 soundtracks are backwards compatable with 5.1 and below (pro-logic, etc...). You won't be missing any information either. The rear center info is simply fed into the rear surrounds. I have a 5.1 setup (DD & DTS) and play movies encoded in 6.1 with no problem.

You could always tell the wifey that your equipment is out of date and you need to buy new stuff. Somehow I think she won't believe you.

Hi, ya you can listen to a 6.1 soundtrack through a 5.1 but you won't get that sixth rear channel. If a sound track is recorded in 6.1 being (EX or ES) that is a true seperate channel. Gladiator is the best I have found yet. If you buy a good 6 or 7 channel reciever, you can set it up to get a true (not discret)*matrixed* rear effect on all 5.1 dvd's. I have the Onkyo TX-DS787 with my FX500i's on the side set to dipole and a CS245i in the center rear. To be honest, I could not live without that sixth channel it feels in so much of the surround sound. That new THX check on the Phantom menace, without the rear center it is like night and day. That thunder rolls from the front of the room to the back and slams directly into my center rear giving an incredible 3D like soundfield. This works great with movie scenes witch roll across the back or back to front also. Some peolpe may disagree with me but unless you experience it in your own theater it is hard to judge. The rear sort of mimics the front stage, it make cents. 3 front -3 rear. Sort of laid out in a circle pattern. I would not promote 15.1 setups making speaker companys millionaires but the 6.1 is an necessity I love it. My 2cents:cool:

i tried this, when i bought a new disc changer that had the optical out. she said" the new one looked just like my old one and the old one works fine." my only response i could come up with was "but the old one is analog!"
i just bought our new rcvr jan of 2000, while she was out of town on a business trip. i have learned to always make sure i can get full refund within 30 days....
