There is a metric scale etched on the opening, I know,it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either.

Decades ago when metric was coming to the US (it still hasn't fully arrived), old "Pop tronics" magazine had an article about hand tools. In the wrench category, they listed sizes like 1/4 inch (6.3mm) totally missing the point that it's not a metric size.

For cars, it's a metric world. I only use a couple of fraction sizes for other stuff.
    1/4, 3/8, 1/2 9/16. I don't know why adjustable would be listed as either.
If you knew what size you needed, you'd just go grab the normal combo wrench.

I saw some of those displayed next to the left hand shovels.

The speedskating club often get's new skates from Australia. The blades are attached with Whitworth bolts! A US 1/2 inch wrench is too small and a Metric 13mm wrench is to big. Once the bolts are removed with an adjustable wrench, the go in the trash and are replaced with US bolts that have the same thread.

It really is metric. They aren't crescent wrenches with infinite adjustability. They click into place in notches.

Kinda defeats the whole purpose of an adjustable wrench.
