Can someone ID these speakers?

I just picked these up at an estate sale for $35. They came with the original manual and are in mint condition. I hooked them up to my system and even my wife thought they sounded amazing compared to the Klipsch bookshelf speakers.

I am pretty sure they are the Monitor 4 Series 2, but can anyone give me a little more info about them? There's not much identifying information on them except for the back has the number 9014597 and the manual only mentions connections to a turntable.

Regardless, I'm going to replace my $300 Klipsch speakers with these.

I have them as rear surrounds.
    Nice speakers.
    What Klipsch are you replacing?

    Klipsch RB81, KG3.5, B&W DM602.5, Polk.
Subwoofers: Klipsch RW10, Triad ProSub Bronze.

Not a guess, that's what they are :-)
Note the "M4" moniker on the S/N tag...

They are the dimensions of the Monitor 4 in the manual. Does anyone know what year they are from or how much they are worth? I assume I got a good deal at $35 just based off of how they sound.

In 1989 I paid $199 for a new black pair. I used them for the rear channels with my 1.2s.

Is it just me, or do these really sound better than a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers that cost $300?

If YOU think they sound better than the Klipsch that's all that matters, someone else may have a different opinion. I find it's a good idea to listen to new speakers for a couple of weeks or so before forming an opinion. Also after a couple of weeks switch back to the Klipsch, your opinion may change.

    Good idea.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum. You got a pretty good deal on those. I would figure around $80 for a pair as well if one did nothing more than sell the drivers as spare parts.

Yes, those are (newer than mine) Monitor 4's--and yes, they do sound great for their size. I have used mine as:

    1) main speakers when I was in college
    2) surround speakers when DPL first came out
    3) center channel speakers in my current 5.1 setup

I don't think I've ever gotten better use out of a piece of stereo gear in my life!
