i managed to inherit a ton of audio equipment recently. the person from whom i received it is not known to buy bad equipment (he owns a lambrighini diablo; he essentially didn't want to go through the trouble of selling this stuff, so i got it). i took the better part of an afternoon to wire it up, and i know i did that properly cause its all labelled and such, and i've only got one problem. i'm a complete newbie in the realm of home audio, i stick to the car side, so i don't know how crossovers work here. my receiver has setttings for each speaker (right, left, surrounds, center) as either large or small. i take it that setting a speaker to large doesn't implement a crossover, while setting it to small puts a highpass on it? problem is, even with the center set to small, i still get bass out of it, and it's distorting (i think - i don't know what kind of shape this stuff is in or how old it is, so that just might be its sound). i've got me a damn good sub that i already had, and i want it to have all the low-end duties. is there such a thing as an external equalizer/active crossover that i can hook up and take the guesswork out of all this? thanks for any help.

Congrats, tell us what equipment you have. As for the settings, you are usually best to set all speakers to small. This is a high pass filter in the receiver that is usually set around 100 Hz if it isn't variable. Double check all the connections and if you are still getting distortion then switch the cables, wires, speakers etc around and try to find the source of the problem.

Gate nailed it, We can help a lot if you can provide us with as much info as possible about the gear you have. Model numbers would be a huge help.

okey... i went and checked out all my connections; turns out i had totally skipped my "digital surround adapter." i put that into the circuit, and everything is dandy now (as an added bonus, my surround speakers function too). i set all the speakers to small and that worked too. it didn't before cause those settings were on the 5.1 adapter. thanx for your help, tho.

    Nice stuff... Somebody loved you...

Rotel is almost universally respected here. Feelings are a bit more mixed on the B&W's, but most think well of them. Haven't heard much on the Def Tech sub.

Nothing special about the Sony bits. They're not bad, just nothing special...

    Bose... uh... no...
