What is your favorite Frank Zappa album(s)?

I was thinking about Zappa albums because I was at a local music store today and noticed that the Zappa family is re-releasing a lot of Zappa's music on CD. I had some Zappa albums when I was in high school 20+ years ago and even saw him live once (Pier 84, NYC, 1982 or 1983) but do not currently have any of his music on CD. I will have to buy some of the newly-remastered CDs.

I am curious which Zappa albums are people's favorites

I always liked his more serious work, like Hot Rats and Wazzo, over his more commercial and/or crude pieces, although there IS something great as well about a song like "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" from Joe's Garage. His music has a little bit of everything for everyone - from high art to pop culture.

I am curious which Zappa albums are people's favorites.

To hard to pick a favorite one, but I will say the 3 I listen to most are Hot Rats, One Size Fits All, and Bongo Fury. That's a hard one to answer for a die hard fan.

Gotta admit I always seem to really like Shut Up and Play Your Guitar. But like chumlie said, Zappa changes depending on your mood. I also like Overnight Sensation, for a while I really liked Live at the Fillmore East, sometimes Hot Rats, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Apostrophe, Joe's Garage, and even Shiek Yerbouti although some of that hasn't held up so good for me . I even liked Zoot Allures for awhile in college, side one vinyl, mostly for Wind Up Working In A Gas Station and Black Napkins, one of my favorite individual songs. You'll get all kinds of opinions on Frank.

The funny thing about this album is that there is a one minute blast of white noise that nobody seems to notice.

That is I would play the album and no one would comment on the white noise sound.

I always wondered if Zappa was just pulling our leg to see if anyone was realing listening.

I have no favorite album it just depends on my mood.

    I have no favortite

Tough call. I guess I would have to say One Size Fits All is my favorite, but I love many others.

After thinking on this,I'll have to say Mothers Live At Fillmore East 1971....an absolute spoof of the rock scene mixed with just downright good music!

I have Burnt Weenie Sandwiches on vinyl, and have just been getting more into Zappa. I like Hot Rats and seem to prefer his instrumental and jazz fusion stuff better. I also recently picked up Grand Wazoo on cd and really like that one.

Anyone recommend the best of his instrumental only stuff??

The song "Weasels Ripped My Flesh?" We all knew it was there as the last track on the album. Everybody else lifted the needle off the vinyl cause there wasn't much point in listening to a tune that was nothing but feedback. You should have also.

I didn't listen to that track if I was alone, but if someone was in the room and I played it they never noticed it or commented on it.

I always wondered why Zappa put it in the record. It had no musical value to me.

Hochpt21: My favorite of his instrumental stuff is Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar, a three disc set with some fantastic lead solos. Also like some of the You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore. Vol. II, I think it is, has a good version of Sexual Harassment In The Workplace recorded live in Madison in 1985.

Never knew there were so many Zappa fans.

    Who are the brain police?

Having attended over 30 concerts I think I saw about 10 women per concert.

Not to get this post off coarse, but I purchased the dvd/cd box set of Zappa plays Zappa and I can't stop listening to it. Napoleon Murphy Brock, Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio are all guest on this cd. His father would be extremely proud of his son and the fact that his music still lives on for others to enjoy. Dwezil and the band nail the music note for note and he is an amazing guitarist. I got to see him tour this past June and will definetly see him when he revists this area again. As far as Frank, I agree with others depending on my mood. Capt. Beefheart, Overnight Sensation/Apostrophe, Joe's Garages and the compilation of Have I Offended Someome are some of my favorites.
