HT in a box Sony

I'm trying to help some one buy a home theather in a box. Does anyone have any experience with the Sony HT-v600dp @ $400 or v1000dp @ $500? These units sounded OK at medium volume. They are for her 73 yo father who loves old movies. The budget is very limited. Any other suggestions for HT?

    FWIW, Consumer Reports (11/03 issue) rated the Sony HT-1800DP their #1 choice with DVD player @ $450. Without a DVD, the HT-DDW750 ranked high with a MSRP of $300.

    I have the smaller $299.00 unit in my bedroom with a 43" sony tv and it kicks **** for the price, it shakes the back half of the house!!!
