Does Onkyo 809 have 12v trigger?

Can't find any where on the back panel. I need this feature to control my XPA-5. If not, what is my option?

I dont think they have a 12 volt trigger. I have a green or smart power strip that I use. There is one plug that is the controling plug. It detects when the device is turned on or off that is plugged in to the socket. It has 3 plugs that are non switched (hot all the time). And 3 or 4 plugs that are switched (powered on or off when the device that is plugged in to the controling plug is on or off).

I have my AVR plugged in to the controlling plug, Amplifier, Sub, Wirless Network Bridge, and cooling fan pluged in to the switched outlets. My PS3, TV, and Dish Network box pluged in to the non switched outles.

You would think any AVR that has analog pre outs would also have a trigger.

It has two 12v triggers that are operated by zone2 or 3.

So you have to manually turn them on by the remote. I guess that is better than nothing.

Its still kind of ridiculous though. It would be nice if you could at least program the macros in the remote to do it as long as it will turn on other components with a one button push. How hard could it have been to make it possible to turn on a 12v trigger along with it.

unbelievable for Onkyo, has pe-out but no trgger.

In this case, wouldn't it be simpler to just push the button on the amp to turn it on ?

That is what I am doing the last couple months and will continue doing that. For my Adcom I kept it on all time.

Why can't you just use the zone 3 trigger and use it for your amp to turn it on and off ?

I tried it on my 805 (turn on my 5-channel amp using zone 2 trigger), but couldn't get it to work. The receiver switches to zone 2 if I remember correctly or something like that.

Although that's an impractical design. I'm pretty sure you're right. Onkyos are built to have to operate in zone 2 or 3 to use these features! Go figure. And yet my older Denon AVR 2807 has two 12V triggers?

I wish I had something with a 12v trigger to test this but..........I went into the menu and set my zone2 as a fixed mode. If I push zone2 on the remote(green light) and hit the receiver power button it turns on zone2 on the receiver, which according to the manual will throw12v out of the trigger. Then I press the receiver button on the remote and the receiver functions as normal. To shut the zone2 off and activate the trigger the procedure is just the opposite. If I get time tomorrow I am going to try and remember to bring my multi-meter over here, hook it up to test it.

I'm in the exact same boat. The Parasound amp I'm using has a flakey power switch (contact issue, or dirty me thinks). So, I was going to turn it on instead with the 12v from my 809.

Er uh... Lame.....

Onkyo limits zone 1 triggers to their Integra line and pre-pros. I'm in the same boat... I half-**** got around it by getting a Belkin PF60 and hooking it to the switched outlet on my cable box as a trigger, then have the PF60 control turning on my backlighting, etc. The PF60 also lets you turn a switched outlet control like that into a 12v trigger output, and there are many devices like that. Some people are using power-sensing power strips and wall-warts as 12v triggers.

So there are options... but yeah, it kinda' sucks. Every time my cable box comes on to record something, it kicks my amp on. Still working out a better solution, but it isn't a priority.

It works. You just set Zone 2 to fixed, make sure Powered Zone 2 is off in the options, and you can program a universal remote (like a Harmony remote) to kick zone 2 on as your system powers up. You just have to program the button for this on the Harmony by hitting the Zone 2 button on the original remote, then the power button and record that code to your universal remote. You can then use it in a macro. It's a pain... but that's how people have been handling it.

I fashioned a 12V trigger out of a 12V DC converting wall plug by cutting the plug off the end and replacing it with a 3.5mm headphone plug. I plugged the converter into the switched outlet on the back of the receiver. However, some Onkyo receivers (like the 809) don't have a switched AC outlet on the back.

From my understanding "smart" surge protectors use a moving pen that opens and closes to connect power to the switched outlets. This may be less than ideal for directly powering high current amps. If your receiver does not have a switched outlet you could fashion a plug like the one I described above and plug it in to the switched outlet of one of these smart surge protectors. Then plug a remote controlled component (blu ray player, cd player, etc.) in to the master plug. This will allow you to plug your amp in to a better outlet.
