I am looking to see if anyone around here has a decent laptop for sale. I am inquiring for a friend (one with the Klipsch speakers).
I am looking for something with these minimum specs:
Operating system: Windows XP, 7 or Win 8
CPU: i3 or higher (flexible here thought), can be AMD
Graphics: Onboard or dedicated GPU
Memory: 4 gig or more DDR3
Screen size: 15.6 or higher
HDD: 500 or more (can be flexible here)
Preferred Brands: HP, Dell, Samsung, Asus
Budget is around the 300 dollar mark I think, but there might be some wiggle room.
If you have something that might work let me know.

i3 is going to be hard to find at that price point. You're going to be pretty much limited to AMD Fusion and Intel Atom or Celeron processors for $300. The Toshiba above is a Fusion.
Occasionally the Lenovo Outlet will have a ridiculous bargain, but their inventory changes constantly. I'd keep an eye on that site, and when you see a deal, jump on it before it's gone. Just bought a laptop from them myself. It was a CTO (configure to order) laptop that someone apparently had ordered and canceled, so there was only one, but I managed to snag it. E430 w/ i5, 7200 rpm, 8GB RAM and a fingerprint reader for $450.
But like I said, their stock is constantly changing. By that, I mean you can be looking at the specs on a laptop, and it might be gone by the time you try to add it to your cart. If you manage to add it to your cart, it is reserved for you and you have 15 minutes to complete the checkout process before it's released and someone else can buy it.
If you want to avoid that rat race, best bet is to cruise sites like Dealnews.com, techbargains.com and slickdeals.net to find out who currently has the best bargains on laptops.

FYI if anyone is still searching for a laptop deal...
Right now Office Depot is having a sale on a Lenovo Ideapad G530 15.6" w/ i3 2.5GHz, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Win8 for $340, in-store only. It is an Ideapad, so it will have bloatware on it, but for the price it's a bargain. It's also a bit on the heavy side at 5.73 lbs. But a bargain is a bargain. You'll have to click the link and see if any nearby stores have it in stock.

The OP asked for a low-budget i3 laptop... I doubt he cares. $340 for an i3 with these specs is pretty much unbeatable, regardless of the resolution. New, anyway.

And there's always Dealnews, SlickDeals and TechBargains. There's always a super-good deal to be had on a laptop somewhere.

Dan,
If your friend does not mind refurbished notepad you might want to take a look at HP Business Refurbished . Back in June I picked up a laptop with i5 2450 4gb memory, win7 pro and 500gb hd for around 375. The laptop came with standard HP support for business laptop (I think 3 years). -
