We bought a new PC over the weekend. It has a 60 SSD drive which win 7 is installed on. In my old PC I have two other HDs plus an external HD. My question is can I slap in my old C: in the new PC and format it or will this cause the new pc confusion when starting up? Also on my other older HD has the thin power cable but my new PC has the 4 peg version, is there an adaptor to be able to hook this up?

Thanks ahead

I found by surfing a molex to sata adaptor, great. Thanks
So do I just install the old C: before I boot up the new pc or install it after win 7 is up and running?

Sorry if this seems basic for some of you, I'm trying to recycle parts.

    Willow suggestion for you:

If your old PC is a Win 7 one and you have an external hard drive with enough space to do so, I would suggest creating a "system image" of your current C drive which you would store on that external drive.

Then you create a restore disc that you put in your new computer and it lets you transfer over your entire current C drive to the new computer (assuming the size works).

Otherwise as stated you should be able to put the old one in the new case and boot from it with no problems (done that myself MANY times).

Sorry old PC is running XP. Does that mess things up?

    Willow:

Ignore my response, I thought you were wanting to move the contents of the hard drive and the operating system over rather than just totally reformat it and use the space. My head is a bit foggy as we are still here in the hospital and I am adjusting to the amount of sleep a newborn lets you get (none )

You can put the old hard drive in the new computer and format it (erasing all the contents).

The only thing you may need to do if it doesn't boot right up is check which hard drive is the "boot" drive but more than likely that wont be a problem.

Congrats BTW on the birth. Hope mother and baby are doing well. Trust me I know sleepless nights with our 20 month old 2 yr molars coming in and a one month old. Sometimes I don't know how I get any work done.

Thanks so I will slap in my old XP drive in my win 7 pc. start it up and format it so I can use the space. My other drive is not an issue as I just need to buy a molex to sata cable.

Now get back to mommy and baby!

With a new computer you may want to check inside, most new power supplies have sata connectors on them (this may already be used by your ssd if there is only 1 however).

so the ssd drive is on an adapter? It has to be a sata hook up and there are usually three per cable.
