404 sub and hook up?

pioneer VSX-55TXi with a single sub out on the back. and a 404 polk sub.

my question is what "hole" hahahahaha,,, in the sub does the plug from the reciever go into?

i have a Y at the end of my "sub" cable and one end taped,and the other end going into the bottom "hole" in the sub. not either of the sterio holes. ive read all kinds of ways doing it, but no reason as to why.

it sounds ok, but muddy if you ask me, course my room is maybe 12X12 or so,very small. some put the cable in the left or right on the sub. and im very confused. id hate to break somthing doing it wrong.

any help would be great.
also, when i use the mic and test setup from the reciever, where should the knobs be set on the sub,BEFORE i do the set up test?

Remove the y-splitter. Run a single RCA style cable from your receiver to the filtered left or right (it does not matter which side) input on the sub.

Set sub volume at 12 o'clock position. On the Pioneer setup menu, set subwoofer to on/yes, set the crossover frequency to 100hz, and set front speakers to small. Frequencies below 100hz will go to the sub, and frequencies above will go to the front speakers. (This will make your front mids more clear). Set the phase on the sub to 0. Put the power switch to Auto.

You could also set the Pioneer x-over to 80hz, let your ears decide.

you said i could set the reciever to 80 or let my ears decide. well, what would it be set to if not 80? how do i set to nothing? BTW: the reciever is at 80 now.

oh, what about the "sub cable" with a jack on one end, and two on the other? do i have to buy a new one with just one on each end??

one more thing. what do i set the low pass on the sub to? or dont it matter because im using the recievers filters for this?

I would suggest using the Y-splitter for +3db, and using the unfiltered inputs. There is no need to double filter, if you don't have to. The crossover point will be handled by the AVR. The crossover point is up to you, most people use 80hz.

Polkthug - That is from Dr. Spec, so thats good enough for me.

y splitter is like adding two wires (ie: two speakers) It will cause a 3 db increase. I run mine with speaker wire, i would try that hook up to.

There is only one unfiltered input on the 404. It is labeled LFE. Use it.

Do not use the filtered input jacks.

The AVR will filter the signal for you. All speaks to small, sub to on/yes, crossover to 80 Hz.

Adding a Y splitter just doubles the voltage the subs amp sees. A doubling of the signal strength yields a 3 dB increase in volume.

Using a Y splitter is no different than clicking up the sub level 3 notches with the AVR. There is no need for one unless your auto-on circuit is "sleepy", which is not my experience with Polk subs. You can't use one anyway in this case because you only have one unfiltered input jack.

If I looked at the 404 PDF, I would have seen that it had a single input, unfiltered. I did not know that, single cable it is indeed.

I will move my sub connects into the "unfiltered" plugs. I had it backwards in my head, I was thinking that "unfiltered" input meant that the signal going to the sub was unfiltered.
