i'm considering upgrading my denon 1804 to possibly the 3803 or the yamaha rx-v2400. Will upgrading make a difference for my setup, i have had this receiver for a few months now and for the first time I played a cd at about -2 and had the receiver shut down. Yes, I have set the front speakers at large is this proper or should i set it at small, also will the added amplification of these units make a difference in sound quality. your advice is appreciated from a newbie.

Mains: RTI150's
Center: CSI 40
Surround: RTI 38's
SB: fxi30
sub: 12' Velodyne

The 1804 doesn't have enough juice to power your mains. You should consider separates with a very powerful amp. A much less expensive alternative is to change out your 150's for a pair of 70's.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I agree. The 3803 would have a time running those 150's without an amp to get there full potential. The 70's would be better with your current reciever and even better with the 3803. So the choice is IMO trade the 150's for 70's and later get (if you feel the need) the 3803....OR....keep the 150's get the 3803 and later get (if you feel the need) an amp for the 150's. The later buys will add to the overall sound performance by adding better power/speaker match.

thanks for your help, I will consider the later version hopefully getting the 3803 at 6thAve and later getting a seperate amp for the 150's. I will be selling the 1804 that I have had for a few months in the low 200's I purchased the 150's at CC at clearance prices and they were cheaper than the 70's. Little did I know at the time that the 70's was the better buy for the receiver that I have.
