I stopped at a yard sale and while there the guys says look at this custom putter, The guy even signed it. you can have it for $5.00. I offered $2.00 He said ok. When I got home I looked up the patent #. It was made by Raymond D Mathews. He sells them for $185.00. This has never hit a ball. I guess the guy didn't know what he had My good.

That's awesome. I play golf so rarely that $2 sounds about right for a golf club... Everything I've used is a hand-me-down, garage sale or craigslist. Anything over $5/club sounds like highway robbery.

So the question: are you going to be the first to use the club?

I get the concept of getting a good deal, and I like a sale as much as the next guy, but never at the expense of a individual. I'm not saying that's what you did intentionally, but I'd never do that and find out about it and then later to come post about it. I realize that it's the seller's responsibility to research and name a price, but taking advantage of that to me always feels like picking on the 'slow' kid in school.

I hear it all the time with guys up at work saying they got a ridiculous deal from some sucker on CraigsList. I can't put my finger on it, just doesn't seem right to me, as a result my negotiation skills suck.

I'm not passing judgement as I know there are two sides to it, just thought I'd share another perspective...

Why not, it's not like he's bragging to the guys face that he bought it from. He took a gamble on a putter he and the other person didn't know anything about, and found out later. Maybe the other person did have an idea and just didn't care and wanted to give someone a good deal. :)

That's why I hate those parasites on American Pickers and other, similar "reallity" shows. There's nothing like hearing them boasting about how they skewered some nice old lady. The golf club/yardsale thing isn't as troubling due to the fact that no knowledge was possessed and withheld by Polkie potee. Karma considerations might compel one to offer a little more dough,though...............

That's what I was trying to say, better phrased, first couple sentences nailed my thoughts exactly.

And somewhere someone is glad to be finally rid of that golf club.

Potee- nice find. The guy knew what he had, a signed custom putter. He offered it for sale at 5 you offered 2. It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Example - my son has a signed football by Bill Parcells....any takers?
Rig1 - Totem Hawks, Benchmark HDR, Parasound A21, Sonus, Samsung 52 LCD, Audioquest Type4
Rig2 - LFD LE IV Integrated, Harbeth P3ESR, Rega Dac, MF V-Link, IMAC, Audioquest Type4

    Yep.

Nice score, but putt with it and see if it's something you're going to stick with. I found a great looking putter for a few bucks at a thrift store a few months back and while it was a steal, the thing was unbelievably hard to putt with, even after giving it some time. I had a very hard time judging power and it just didn't respond the way I thought it should. My brother has a nice Odyssey White Hot putter that he's letting me borrow and it's amazing how different the two are. The Odyssey is much easier to putt with and has a great feel to it, but most importantly, it responds the way I feel like it should.

Finding the right putter can be difficult, but once you find the right one it's a thing of beauty!

Actually american pickers isn't too bad (it's fake anyway), but at least if they think they are getting too good of a deal they will pa a bit more (or am I thinking pawn stars...fake too so I guess it doesn't matter). They are out to make money, if they don't get a good deal on it, there would be no point in what they are doing. And besides, it would have just sat in dust if they hadn't bought it anyway. Probably would have been sold to a bulk scrap person when they died anyway. I see what your saying though, but I don't think the show does it quite as bad as you make it seem.

Let me say I had no idea what the putter was worth or even if that was the guys real signature. So I just bought it to set in the corner as it looked cool. But now that I know they are supposed to be pretty good clubs I'll try it out. BTW I don't feel guilty at all as I was as ignorant as he was. I damn sure wasn't going back to tell him about it.
