Wondering if anyone has Tommy on SACD and could give a critique...

    I've got the double disc SACD of Tommy but I haven't listened to it in quite some time. I can play a couple of selections for you, if you wish, and let you know my observations. I also have the RB version [not the hybrid RB layer on the SACD but I have that as well] to make a comparison with. My gear is listed in my profile.

    Just let me know which selections (if any) you wish to be observed and I'll be happy to let you know my thoughts.

    I've got the DVD-A version, which sounds great. Unfortunately I've never heard the SACD version. I picked it up from Frys. The SACD version was $28 and the DVD-A version was $19. I don't have too many DVD-As so I decided to go with it.

    I have the SACD and just listened to it last night. One of my favourite SACD's. Very good use of multi-channel. It is not "all" in the back speakers. Clean and crisp, bass is not overdone on the mix but when called for it kicks in. The soundstage is huge and immersive. Lights out, favourite drink in hand and let the music en-gulf you! :) Always a treat to listen to.

    Underture is by far my standout track on this SACD

    I have this version:
    Tommy (Deluxe Edition) (Hybrid SACD) [Extra tracks, Hybrid SACD - DSD, Original recording remastered]
    It's $26 on Amazon, I would not hesitate to pick it up. Import Cds has it for $20.00

    If you have any specific questions let me know. I do not have any other versions/media so I can not compare it to anything else.

    I have the same version "Tommy (Deluxe Edition) (Hybrid SACD) [Extra tracks, Hybrid SACD - DSD, Original recording remastered]" and broke it out last night after seeing this thread. I can comment only on the 2ch layer as I don't have a 5.1 system set up. I also don't have the LP or redbook CD to compare. I do have the original soundtrack on LP.

    The most startling benefit that I hear are in the vocals, the guitars and subtle elements of the many, many over dub'd instrument tracks. The SACD format does a great job of bring out these details.

    I am not too impressed with the drums but this is more due to the quality of the original recording. In general the drums are a little recessed but I'll assume that is the way that they are intended to be mixed. The kick seems to be not well defined, like the microphone is being over driven. There are other places as well where the recording system seems over driven. The SACD format also does a fantastic job of capturing all these details which are a sign of the period in recording.

    Thanks all for your input. Getting my first Oppo on Wednesday and I'd like to start collecting SACDs. I'm ordering Tommy and Brothers In Arms, that would be a good start for me I think. Thanks again, your opinions mean a lot to me. Say, there are some really nice people on CP, just don't tell them, it might go to their heads:mrgreen:

    Great place to research SACD's is http://www.sa-cd.net/home Type in an artist or album title in the search box (upper right hand corner) and it will show all the sacd's and reviews on them. It also shows the price at certain online shops with Amazon . ca being one of them.

    You can pick up a lot of nice SACD's from Amazon, just double check Sa-Cd.net as some of the titles listed on Amazon are not SACD's but say they are.

    Reviews are key as some SACD's sound great and some not so great or not much better then their redbook counterpart. Good luck with your new found format!

    Thanks for the link gf. The ones I ordered are from .ca, and I see what you mean by watching which ones are SACD and which aren't, they're mixed up.

    To add to what I said earlier about this album... I gave it a more serious listen through my RTA11TL's vs headphones. It really is a well mastered recording. The sound stage through the speakers is very impressive even with the positioning of my speaker being too close to the side walls. In between the speakers, you really get a sense of the placement of each instrument.
