Sacd...

Thinking of purchasing a new DVD player with SACD decoding. My question is... is it worth the purchase or should I just stick with what I have. If I purchase a new DVD player I will give the old one to my dad. He has the Mit. 55" Widescreen with no progressive scan DVD player, he just has a plain Sony DVD. This is the DVD player I'm think about getting. Don't really wanna spend a whole lot of money with X-mas in a couple of weeks. Tell me what you members think.

I just realized something. The DVD/SACD player I'm interested in has built-in Dolby Digital/DTS decoders with 5.1 output. Is this going to effect my current setup due to the fact that my receiver already has that feature built-in. Thanks for your help guys.

    Grimster,
Looks like a decent unit! 5 disc and SACD, go for it!
Since you'll probably want to use the player's 5.1-channel analog output to enjoy multichannel SACDs, you can let the player's built-in Dolby® Digital and DTS® decoders handle DVD movie soundtracks, too (or do like most folks, and make a one-cable digital connection to an A/V receiver with Dolby Digital/DTS decoding).

Basically you can use the either the changer or your receiver to do the decoding. You'll have to try it both ways to see which sounds the best to you.

Look at the Pioneer DA-45. For about $100 more you get DVD-Audio. This is really worth it. They sound fantastic.

Or look at the Denon DVD-2200... No, it is not a changer, but....

Well Forum members, I appreciate all the recommendations but as you can tell from my signature I'm only a Sony man. My order has been placed with Crutchfield and will be here by the end of the week. Christmas early this year. :D

Sony makes nice products, however by limiting your selection to only Sony products you've eliminated the ability to play DVD-A.

Grimster - Cool, that is a nice player, you will enjoy it very much.

I have been really agonizing over what to do as far as the DVD/SACD issue....and unfortunately I can't seem to justify the Sony over the Denon for video quality. I was planning on getting the 999ES, but it has known issues with video display, so it looks as though I will be getting the Denon 2900 or 5900. SACD for the 2CH will certainly be my homeslice 555ES, but I am being encroached by another manufacturer...and my gear is not happy :D

Now, as far as surround decoding & D/A conversion, you could use either the player or the reciever. The choice is yours.

You may be able to determine which is "better" by reading up on the specs. I'd bet they will sound the same, so use whichever is more convenient in terms of cabling.

Doro, I was leaning to the 999ES myself but like I said, didn't really wanna spend alot of funds at this time. Have other thing on my purchase list :D at the moment. Largest one being Home Theater Seating so I can get rid of that ugly **** couch and loveseat.

Doro, do let us know, if you are getting a 5900. For the money, ($1500 street price authorized) it is the best universal in its price range (of course you can go with Krell or Meridian for much more). It is in the sweet spot IMHO. RBCD supposedly better than 3800 (my reference point on Denon players). DVD with DVI is where it shines the most.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Grimster - I completely understand. Let me know how the new player looks. :)

Polk - I most certainly will do so. I figure I will get my benchmark from the Denon. Where have you seen the price? I haven't really looked yet, as it won't be until early next year for that.

    doro,
from my trusted B&M found-thru-net-will-ship-conusa friend ;) He is in MN. Actually, the cheapest price I've seen is $1384 (not sure if autho.) but if I am in the market for it, I will sure go autho. out-of-state-no-sales-tax route....

I picked up a Shaning T100. While it is not SACD it does incredible things with redbook CD's and is HDCD capable. Top that off if what I think is an awesome look and I couldn't be happier.

True for DVD but NOT for SACD. Only the player can handle that.

Yes, I missed that. Only the player will decode the SACD's. Nice catch.

Well, received my SACD/DVD player yesterday. I tell ya one thing, Crutchfield is on there toes this year. I placed my order Tuesday at 10 a.m. and I had my items before noon yesterday. Talk about one happy customer.

Had a little time yesterday to get it hooked up and full around with it a bit. Don't have any Super Audio cd's yet but Sony did send a demo SACD cd. I beleive it was Bob Dylan. So far, I really enjoyed listening to it in 4.1. I know, 4.1, what is that, that is where I only had enough cables to hook up the FR, FL, RR, RL and Sub. To be completely honest with ya I really don't think I'm going to hook up the center. Call it personal preference or whatever but I just don't like the sound with the center channel running. I went out and purchased more cables today so I may try it again just to see how it sounds.

Anyway, once I finish getting everything setup and running properly I will post again on my full impressions. Other than PF, Dark Side of the Moon, does anyone else have any recommendations on some good SACD. Thanks.

    Grim,
without center channel, you'll miss a whole lot of information. You can try it, and hear it yourself. On 5.1 SACD/DVD-A, IMO, half of the benefit of the effects lies in the center channel.

Another great SACD demo: Night Sessions, Chris Botti; Gaucho, Steely Dan; Look of Love, Diana Krall

btw, what kind of unit did you buy? congrats!
